Thorson Tallied 15 Kills, as Tulsa Sweeps ECU, 3-0

TULSA, Okla. – The Golden Hurricane (11-12, 5-6 American) was at the friendly confines of the Donald W. Reynolds Center as it hosted the ECU Pirates (15-9, 7-4 American) Thursday. Emily Thorson led the attack with 15 kills, as TU defeated ECU, 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-18).

The Pirates jumped out to an early 7-2 lead to start the first set. With score 11-7, in favor of ECU, Tulsa went on a 5-0 run and took a 12-11 lead. Tulsa extended its lead to 23-20, before ECU pulled within one, 23-22. After a well-timed timeout, Tulsa went on to score the next two points and win the first set, 25-23. Emily Thorson led the offense with five kills, as Rachel Moore added four kills. Lindsey Ledyard assisted on seven kills. Taylor Horsfall and Mariah Pardo each notched four assists. Horsfall led the defense with nine digs. Thorson along with Callie Cook tallied two block assists to lead TU.

Much like the first set, ECU saw itself with a five-point lead in the second set, 14-9. The Pirates extended their lead to 21-18, but the Golden Hurricane climbed back and tied the set, 22-22. TU took the second set by the score of 25-23. Pardo totaled eight assists to lead the team. Horsfall scooped up four digs, while Ashton Anderson chipped in with three. Thorson led the attack with seven kills. Cook recorded three assisted blocks to go along with a solo block, for four total in the set.

After the intermission, the Hurricane came out swinging and started the third set with a 5-0 run. The Golden Hurricane never slowed down and went on to win the set, 25-18. The third set was the only set that did not have a tie score or a lead change. Pardo and Horsfall each collected five digs in the set. Cook and Moore each had a block assist. Pardo provided seven assists, while Ledyard added six. Thorson, Cook, Emily Hubbard, and Ebony Carter all had three kills.

The Pirates had 55 digs, 41 kills, 40 assists, and five blocks. Ashton Mares led ECU with 13 kills and Shelby Martin had 35 assists. Brandee Markwith had a game-high 19 digs.

Pardo achieved her fifth double-double with 19 assists and 10 digs. Cook tied a career-high with seven blocks, six assisted and one solo. Thorson went for a match-high 15 kills and Moore was in double-digits with 10 kills. Horsfall recorded a team-high 18 digs. Ledyard finished the match with 16 assists. As a team, the Hurricane totaled 52 digs, 47 kills, 43 assists and nine team blocks.

With the victory, the Golden Hurricane improved to 11-12 overall and 5-6 in the American Athletic Conference. Tulsa will return to the court Saturday, Oct. 28, as it hosts the Cincinnati Bearcats. First serve is scheduled for noon.
