DALLAS, Texas –– For the second straight week and the 4th time this season, Tulsa lost a decision in the waning minutes of the contest as SMU pulled out a 38-34 victory in front of a home crowd of 14,930 fans at Gerald J. Ford Stadium.

Tulsa held the lead through the first three quarters before succumbing to an SMU touchdown with 13:26 left in the game that put the Mustangs ahead 35-34. With SMU ahead by 4 points at 38-34, the Hurricane marched to the SMU 23-yard line with under 6 minutes in the game before an interception in the end zone ended Tulsa's scoring opportunity.

Last week, Tulsa threw into the end zone with 0:01 on the clock, but failed to convert the touchdown. Tonight, the youthful Hurricane squad had one more possession following the interception, but couldn't convert a first down on 4 plays. In games 3 and 4 this year, Tulsa lost on field goals to Toledo and New Mexico as time elapsed in each of those contests.

Tulsa fell to 2-7 overall and 1-4 in the American Athletic Conference, while SMU improved to 6-2 and 3-1 in league play.

D'Angelo Brewer had to carry the load for the Hurricane on the ground as his sidekick, freshman Shamari Brooks, left the game in the first quarter with an injury. Brewer finished with 156 yards and one TD, while freshman red-shirt quarterback Luke Skipper completed 9-of-23 passes for 212 yards and one touchdown.

Tulsa place-kicker Redford Jones scored 10 points on 2 field goals and 4-of-4 on PATs to become the school's all-time scoring leader with 301 career points.

Tulsa put the first points on the scoreboard on their second possession as the Hurricane when 42 yards in 3 plays, as the scoring play was a 41-yard pass from Skipper to Nigel Carter at the 11:01 mark of the first quarter.

After a 52-yard kickoff return, the Mustangs equaled the score at 7 apiece with a 7-yard Ben Hicks to Trey Quinn pass.

The Hurricane responded with a 9-play, 77-yard drive to take a 14-7 lead with just over 3 minutes remaining in the first period. After the defense forced a 3-and-out, the Tulsa offense marched 76 yards in 9 plays for a 21-7 lead as Chad President ran the final 8 yards for the score.

The Mustangs wasted little time, as Braeden West took the first play from scrimmage 75 yards in just 0:12 to make the score 21-14.

The Hurricane had a chance to add to the score after 2 SMU penalties resulting in 30 yards on a Tulsa punt put the ball back in Tulsa's hands at the SMU 31-yard line. The Hurricane got to the SMU 14-yard line, but a 31-yard field goal attempt went wide right, keeping the score at Tulsa 21, SMU 14.

Tulsa went 90 yards in 8 plays to increase its lead to 14 points, 28-14, on a Brewer 9-yard run, but it took the Mustangs offense only one minute to go 90 yards in 3 plays to pull its deficit back to 7 points, 28-21 with 2:47 left on the first-half clock.

The Hurricane appeared to have added 7 points early in the 3rd quarter on a 72-yard Skipper to Justin Hobbs pass, but Hobbs was called for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty that negated the touchdown and brought the ball back to the 27-yard line. Instead of 7 points, Tulsa had to rely on a 49-yard field goal for just 3 points and a 31-21 lead.

SMU marched 61 yards to cut its deficit to 3 points, 31-28, at the 3:36 mark of the 3rd quarter. Tulsa's Jones became the school's career scoring leader when he knocked through a career-long 51-yard field goal at the 1:08 mark of the 3rd quarter to put Tulsa ahead 34-28.

The Mustangs took its first lead of the game, 35-34, with 13:26 remaining in the contest as SMU went 75 yards in just 5 plays. Tulsa took the subsequent possession to the SMU 23-yard line, but a Skipper pass was intercepted in the end zone to end any chance for a Tulsa score.

Tula's defense forced an SMU punt from its own 29-yard line to give the Hurricane offense another chance with 4:13 remaining in the game. A Tulsa completion deep into SMU territory was negated on a Tulsa penalty for illegal formation, and after that the Hurricane gave up the ball on downs to SMU.

For the game, SMU gained 581 total yards to Tulsa's 458. The Hurricane had 246 yards on the ground and 212 passing yards.
