PHILADELPHIA — Senior Ben Preisner finished in third place to lead The University of Tulsa men's cross country team to its fourth consecutive American Athletic Conference Championship on Saturday morning at Belmont Plateau. The TU women's team finished in fourth place.
With a time of 25:12.5, Preisner recorded the third top-3 finish at the conference meet of his career to lead the Golden Hurricane to its eighth consecutive conference title, dating back to its time as a member of Conference USA. The team won the championship with 53 points to top UConn, which totaled 63 points in second place.
In addition, Scott Beattie finished fifth with a time of 25:23.9 to earn the American Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year award, while the TU coaching staff, led by head coach Steve Gulley and assistant coach Taylor Gulley, was named the Men's Cross Country Staff of the Year.
"I'm very proud of our team because we really came together today," Gulley said. "We're very fortunate because the conference is dramatically better than previous years. Winning the conference means a lot to our program and we ran a really good race. I think we made a big improvement in the last two weeks and we'll need to make another big improvement in the next two weeks before regionals."
Four of the team's nine runners finished in the top-15 to claim all-conference honors. Following Preisner and Beattie's top-five finishes were seniors Henry Pearce (9th, 25.43.7) and Adam Roderique (12th, 25:48.0). It marked the fourth-consecutive all-conference showing for Roderique, while Pearce picked up his second all-conference honor.
Sophomore Adam Breaux capped the scoring for Tulsa in 24th with a time of 26:20.4. He was followed by junior Ellis Coon (32nd, 26:34.9), freshman Peter Lynch (35th, 26:38.8), junior Mark Middleton (47th, 27:08.8) and sophomore Robert Tully (53rd, 27:19.5).
In the women's 6K race, sophomore Ashley Barnes led Tulsa with a ninth-place finish and a time of 21:59.4 to claim her first all-conference award. Freshman Caitlin Klopfer (16th, 22:07.1), junior Alyssa Bolliger (20th, 22:15.5), sophomore Reagan Hausmann (24th, 22:30.7) and senior Nicole Lee (32nd, 22:44.9) rounded out the scoring for the TU, which finished with 101 points to finish fourth.
Sophomores Avery Culpepper (43rd, 23:19.1) and Amanda Heard (56th, 23:40.0) closed out the Tulsa lineup.
The teams will return to action on Nov. 10 in Ames, Iowa, for the NCAA Midwest Regionals.
