TU Falls in Five-Set Heartbreaker Against USF

TULSA, Okla. – Tulsa (8-10, 2-4 American) fell to USF (7-9, 2-4 American), 3-2 (18-25, 26-24, 18-25, 25-17, 15-12), Sunday at the Donald W. Reynolds Center. Emily Thorson led TU with a career-high 25 kills, while Taylor Horsfall collected 39 digs.
The Golden Hurricane jumped out to an early 5-1 lead in the first set. TU extended its lead to 20-15, before it closed out the first set, 25-18. Taylor Horsfall scooped up six digs for Tulsa, while Emily Thorson paced the offense with six kills. Mariah Pardo and Lindsey Ledyard each assisted on five kills.
Thorson led the attack in the second set with seven kills. Ledyard provided seven assists, while Pardo chipped in with five assists. Horsfall notched five digs and Emily Hubbard added four digs. The Golden Hurricane was down 20-14, but battled back to tie the set at, 24-24. The Bulls took the second set, 26-24.
Tulsa won the third set, 25-18, as it scored five unanswered points to close out the set. Thorson and Hubbard led the offense with five and four kills, respectively. Horsfall was stout once again as she tallied seven digs. Pardo assisted on seven kills.
In the fourth set, USF came away with a 25-17 win. Thorson, Callie Cook and Rachel Moore all had three kills each. Pardo collected six assists, while Ledyard went for five assists. Horsfall was a digging machine, as she recorded 12 digs.
The Bulls jumped out to an early 8-4 lead, but TU clawed back to pull with one, 8-7. After a timeout, USF extended its lead to 11-8. The Bulls took the fifth set, 15-12. Horsfall led the defense with nine digs. Pardo picked up four assists, while Ledyard had three assists. Thorson recorded four kills.
Clara Payne led USF with 15 kills. Doris Carter and Priscilla Ehieze each had 14 kills. Alex Mendoza had a match-high 53 assists, and collected 18 digs for a double-double. Maria McLamb led the Bulls' defense with 27 digs. As a team, USF had 99 digs, 61 kills, 59 assists, and eight blocks.
As a team, the Hurricane collected 96 digs, 65 kills, 61 assists, and five blocks. Thorson led the Golden Hurricane with a career-high 25 kills. Thorson added 14 digs for her eighth double-double on the year. After recording a new single-match record for digs against UCF, Horsfall positioned herself in third at TU in single-match digs, as she tallied 39 digs. Hubbard notched her sixth double-double, with 14 digs and 11 kills. Moore finished the match with 15 kills and Cook closed out the match with 10 kills. Ashton Anderson recorded double-digit digs, for the second straight match, with 10.
With the loss, TU falls to 8-10 overall and 2-4 in The American Athletic Conference. The Golden Hurricane returns to action Friday, Oct. 13, as it travels to Memphis, Tenn. The match against the Tigers is scheduled for 7 p.m.
