
Tulsa Women Fall to Belmont 90-65

An undermanned and undersized Tulsa squad with only 8 players dressed for the contest fell 90-65 to the Belmont Bruins Sunday afternoon at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
Belmont (1-1) increased its 13-point halftime lead to 20 points at the end of the third period, out-scoring the Hurricane 24-17 in those 10 minutes, and scored 5 points more than Tulsa in the final quarter, 20-15, for its 25-point win. In the second half, Tulsa got only as close as 13 points with 2:47 remaining in the third quarter, but by the end of the period the Bruins pushed its lead to 20 points and in the final period led by as many as 29 points.
Tulsa (0-2) was without 4 of its top-6 scorers from last season against the Bruins. Only two players scored in double-figures for the Hurricane as sophomore Shug Dickson had her second straight 20-point scoring game and seventh in her career with 22 and freshman Krystan Vornes totaled 10 points. As a team, Tulsa connected on just 33-percent of its field goals and shot only 18-percent from three-point range
Belmont had two players score over 30 points, including Darby Maggard and Kylee Smith with 33 and 31, respectively. The Bruins connected on 48-percent overall from the field and 40-percent from three-point range for the game, knocking down 14 treys.
Tulsa jumped out to a 5-0 lead to start the game and Alexis Gaulden's three-pointer made it 10-2 at the 5:41 mark. Belmont out-scored the Hurricane 16-4 for the remainder of the quarter to take an 18-14 lead at the end of the first period.
Vornes scored the first points of the second quarter, cutting Tulsa's deficit to 2 points, 18-16, before the Bruins scored the next 9 points to extend its lead to 27-16 with 7:12 remaining in the first half. It was a 20-2 run that put Belmont out in front. Tulsa freshman Rebecca Lescay scored a traditional three points to make the score 28-19 at the 6:11 mark stopping the 18-pount Bruins run.
Tulsa cut the lead to 8 points, 29-21, on a Dickson field goal at the 5:12 mark. But, over the next three minutes the Bruins went on an 11-5 run and took its largest lead of the half when Maggard connected on her fifth of 6 treys in the first half for a 41-26 lead with 2:23 remaining on the first half clock.
Dickson's traditional three-point play made the score 43-33 with 0:23 left, but Maggard hit her sixth three-pointer with 0:07 to give the Bruins a 46-33 lead at halftime.
Dickson had 13 first-half points for the Hurricane, while Lescay added 7 points. Maggard scored 22 of Belmont's 46 points in the first half on 8-of-12 from the field, including 6-of-9 from three-point range.
Belmont shot 49-percent from the field in the first half and 45-percent from behind the arc, as 9 of their 17 field goals made came from three-point range. Tulsa was just 3-of-11 from three-point range and shot 39 percent overall from the field in the first 20 minutes.
