Four players scored in double figures to lead Tulsa to a 74-61 win over Little Rock on Wednesday afternoon at the Jack Stephens Center in Little Rock, Ark. TU moved to 1-2 on the season, while LR fell to 1-1 overall.
"We got off to a great start, but our block-outs were killing us," Head Coach Matilda Mossman said. "I thought we did a much better job in the second half, and that's the first time I've seen this group be this tough in the final 10 minutes. They went after loose balls, got rebounds and took care of the ball, and it was a great final quarter for us."
Tatyana Perez led all scorers with 18 points, which tied her career-high, while Kendrian Elliott added 17 points and 13 rebounds for a double-double. Crystal Polk posted a career-high 14 points and six rebounds, and Shug Dickson added 11 points. Perez also had a team-best four assists and two steals in the contest.
Tulsa had a game-high 14-point lead with 5:26 remaining in the contest and took home a 13-point victory. TU had a 20-14 scoring advantage in the final quarter and hit 7-of-11 from the free throw line.
The Golden Hurricane had a 39-38 edge in rebounds and a 9-7 lead in assists, while Little Rock had a 6-2 lead in steals and a 3-1 advantage in blocks.
Tulsa had a 22-16 lead at the end of the first quarter, and Perez and Dickson both had a team-best five points. LR battled back to outscore Tulsa, 8-3, for a tied score, 24-24, at the 4:47 mark of the second quarter, and they took the lead on a basket by Ronjanae DeGray 41 seconds later. The Trojans had a 34-32 lead at the break as they had an 18-11 scoring advantage in the second frame.
Tulsa battled back, outscoring Little Rock, 11-4, in the first 5 minutes of the third quarter for a 43-38 lead and inched ahead to a 54-47 advantage with just one frame remaining. Polk had 10 points in the third quarter, while Elliott added seven.
The Golden Hurricane shot 46-percent from the field, 33-percent from three-point range and 75-percent from the free throw line, while the Trojans shot 34-percent from the field, just 9-percent from behind the arc and 72-percent from the charity stripe.
