CONWAY, S.C. — Junior Etou led five Tulsa players in double-figures with 16 points, but Keyshawn Evans hit six 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 29 points to lead Illinois State past the Golden Hurricane, 84-68, on Sunday evening in the third-place game of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off at Myrtle Beach.
Etou was joined in double-figures by Sterling Taplin (15), Curran Scott (13), Martins Igbanu (10) and Elijah Joiner (10). Igbanu neared a double-double with eight rebounds, while Taplin had a game-high six assists for the Golden Hurricane (2-3).
Meanwhile, Phil Fayne and Milik Yarbrough each added 18 points for the Redbirds (2-2), who shot 57.1-percent, including 52.2-percent (12-of-23) from behind the arc.
Tulsa won the opening tip and Scott got the Golden Hurricane on the board first with a 3-pointer before Etou scored inside for a quick 5-0 lead. However, the Redbirds responded with a 20-0 run to take control.
Evans had eight of his 20 first-half points during the run and Illinois State rode a 61.5-percent shooting effort to a 46-27 lead at halftime.
The Illinois State lead was 67-45 with 10:26 to go before the Hurricane outscored the Redbirds 20-9 over the next six minutes to whittle the deficit to 76-66.
Joiner started the spurt with an 18-foot jumper and then Tulsa pounded the ball inside for four straight layups. Joiner hit a 3-pointer and Taplin finished the run with a jumper and triple of his own to make it a 10-point game with 4:08 left.
In all, the TU defense did not allow an Illinois State basket over the final 6:42.
However, the Hurricane would get no closer than 10 as the Redbirds hit eight free throws in the final three-and-a-half minutes to seal the 84-68 victory.
Tulsa will be back in action at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 25, when it hosts Central Arkansas (2-2) at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
