
Tulsa Defense Spurs Hurricane to 60-55 Win over Binghamton

The Tulsa women's basketball team held Binghamton scoreless for the final five minutes of the contest and earned a 60-55 win on Tuesday night in the 40th annual Great Alaska Shootout at the Alaska Airlines Center in Anchorage, Alaska. TU moved to 3-2 on the season, picking up their third-straight win, while BU fell to 3-2 overall.
"I am really proud of the way this group handled the last five minutes of the game," Head Coach Matilda Mossman said. "The game kept going back and forth, but Shug [Dickson] held her composure really well, Erika [Wakefield] showed why she is a senior leader and Crystal [Polk], after missing some early shots bounced back in the second half and did some scoring for us. I am pleased with the balance of this team and the way the held on to win."
Shug Dickson had a team-best 17 points, while Kendrian Elliott added 14 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Crystal Polk added eight points, while Erika Wakefield came in off the bench and had five assists, two steals and seven points.
The Golden Hurricane had a 43-38 lead in rebounds and a 6-4 advantage in steals, while the Bearcats had a 7-2 lead in blocks and a 15-13 edge in assists.
Tulsa shot just 33-percent from the field, 26-percent from three-point range and 68-percent from the charity stripe, while Binghamton shot 41-percent from the field, 33-percent from behind the arc and 25-percent from the free throw line.
Tulsa trailed Binghamton, 19-16, at the end of the first quarter, but the teams went into the locker room tied, 33-all, after the first two periods. Elliott had a team-leading nine points, while Dickson totaled eight in the first half.
TU struggled to shoot the ball in the first half, hitting 14-of-40 for 35-percent from the field, while the Bearcats were 14-of-27 for 51-percent. Both teams were 4-of-11 from three-point range and were a combined 2-of-10 from the charity stripe. The Golden Hurricane's 12-2 advantage in offensive boards kept them in the game.
Binghamton was led by three players in double figures, including 17 points by Imani Watkins, and 11 points each from Kai Moon and Jasmine Sina. Moon had a team-best eight rebounds.
Tulsa will return to action on Thursday, November 23 against the winner of the Alaska-Anchorage-Maryland Eastern Shore game at 5:30 pm Central.
