The Tulsa women's basketball team dropped a 59-53 decision to 2nd-ranked Division II Alaska-Anchorage on Thursday afternoon in the 40th annual and final Great Alaska Shootout at the Alaska Airlines Center in Anchorage, Alaska.

"I am proud of the way we competed the entire tournament," Head Coach Matilda Mossman said.  "It came down to the charge call at the 1:26 mark.  We had a one-point lead, Shug makes a basket, but is called for the foul and Alaska-Anchorage finishes with a 9-2 run.  I am proud of the way we weathered the storm when we were down 11, but UAA played really hard and played with urgency in the end."

Crystal Polk had a team-leading 12 points, while Kendrian Elliott added 11 and Shug Dickson scored 10.  Dickson had a team-best nine rebounds and four assists.  Erika Wakefield added nine points, Alexis Gaulden seven and Rebecca Lescay four in the contest.

For their efforts, Dickson and Polk were named to the GCI All-Tournament team.

There were eight lead change and seven tied scores in the contest.  UAA had a 40-30 lead in rebounds, an 18-15 advantage in assists and a 10-6 lead in steals, while Tulsa had a 4-2 lead in blocks.

Tulsa shot 41-percent from the field, including just eight-percent from three-point range, and went 8-of-9 from the charity stripe, while UAA shot 30-percent from the field, 23-percent from behind the arc and 85-percent (12-of-14) from the free throw line.

After being tied at 7-7 with 4:36 on the clock in the first quarter, UAA went on a 12-2 run to close out the frame with a 19-9 lead.  The Golden Hurricane missed 11-straight field goal attempts and were without a field goal made for the final 5:48 off the clock in the quarter.  Tulsa shot just 17-percent in the first frame (3-of-17), but was 3-for-3 at the free throw line.

TU battled back after being down by 11 with 4:37 left in the second quarter, to trail by five, 32-27, at the half.  Tulsa shot just 36-percent from the field, and although they are shooting 30-percent from three-point range on the season were 0-of-6 in the first half.

Alaska-Anchorage started the third quarter, 0-8, but came back to tie the game at 37-all with 2:53 remaining in the frame and 39-all at the end of the period.

Tulsa climbed to an eight-point lead, 49-41, at the 6:18 mark, but UAA went on an 18-4 run to close out the contest with the six-point win.

"We were up eight with 6:18 left to play and we just failed to score at times," Mossman said.  "At that point we only scored two points until really late, and only had four in the final 6:18."

Alaska-Anchorage was led by Hannah Wandersee with 14 points, while Shelby Cloninger added 13 and Tara Thompson scored 11.  Cloninger and Wandersee each had seven rebounds.

Tulsa will return to action on Wednesday, November 29 against Oral Roberts.  Game time is set for 7:00 pm at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
