Tulsa Sweeps Defending Conference Champs SMU, 3-0

DALLAS, Texas – The Golden Hurricane (15-17, 9-11 American) closed out the season Friday with a conference road match against SMU (21-10, 15-5 American). Emily Thorson had a match-high 18 kills, as Tulsa knocked off the Mustangs, 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-22).

With the Hurricane on top 15-13, TU went on a 4-0 run to extend its lead to 19-13. Tulsa used the momentum to win the first set, 25-18. Rachel Moore posted a set-high six kills and Emily Thorson added five kills. Thorson led the defense with seven digs. Mariah Pardo and Taylor Horsfall chipped in with four digs each. Pardo had a set-high 14 assists. Ebony Carter led the team with two total blocks.

The Golden Hurricane continued where it left off in the first set, as it jumped out to a 9-5 lead to start the second stanza. Tulsa went on a 5-0 run and extended its lead to 15-7. The Hurricane did not let off as it went on to win the second set, 25-17. Thorson led the team with eight digs and seven kills in the second. Carter added four kills. Horsfall scooped up seven digs. Pardo assisted on 13 kills. Thorson, Pardo, Emily Hubbard, and Callie Cook all had one total block.

The Mustangs came out strong in the third set and held an 18-14 lead, but the Hurricane stormed back and tied the third at 21-21. Tulsa went on to win the set, 25-22, as Thorson recorded a kill to seal the match for TU. Ashton Anderson led the defense with 12 digs. Pardo tallied 14 assists and added eight digs. Thorson had a set-high six kills.

As a unit, the Mustangs recorded 64 digs, 34 kills, 31 assists, and three total blocks. Montana Watts led SMU with a match-high 24 digs. Kendall Patterson led the Mustangs with 21 assists. Brittany Adams had a team-high 10 kills.

Thorson posted a match-high 18 kills and tallied 17 digs, for her 16th double-double. Pardo tabbed her 12th double-double with 41 assists and 14 digs. Moore finished the match with 11 kills. Anderson collected a team-high 20 digs. Horsfall chipped in with 18 digs. Pardo, Carter and Thorson all had two total blocks. As a team, the Golden Hurricane combined for 81 digs, 49 kills, 48 assists, and six total blocks.

With the victory, Tulsa concluded its season with a 15-17 overall mark and 9-11 record in American Athletic Conference play.
