Tulsa Women Fall to ORU 53-41 in Mayor’s Cup

TULSA, Okla. –– Poor shooting handicapped Tulsa as the Golden Hurricane (3-4) dropped a 53-41 decision to cross-city rival Oral Roberts (3-3) in the Mayor's Cup Wednesday night at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
No Tulsa player scored in double-figures, and as a team the Hurricane converted just 26-percent from the field, and made just 2-of-16 three-pointers for the game.
Faith Ihim led the Golden Eagles with 22 points and 14 rebounds in 33 minutes of play, as she was the only player to score in double digits for either team. Tulsa sophomores Alexis Gaulden and Shug Dickson shared the team-lead in scoring with 9 points apiece, while fellow sophomore Kendrian Elliott grabbed a team-high 13 rebounds.
ORU began the second half on a 9-2 run to grab a 13-point lead at 37-24 with 4:59 left on the third-quarter clock. Tulsa closed out the third period on an 8-2 run as Erika Wakefield scored the final four points of the period, cutting its deficit to seven points at the end of three, 39-32.
The Hurricane got as close as 5 points at the 9:58 mark of the final period on a Dickson jumper. ORU had an 11-point lead, 45-34, at the 4:10 mark, before Tulsa scored the next 5 points to cut the Golden Eagles lead to 6 points with 1:59 on the clock. ORU made 6-of-10 free throws in the final minute for the 12-point victory.
Tulsa scored the game's first basket on a Gaulden layup, but ORU scored the next 8 points, before Tulsa went on a 7-0 run to take a 9-8 lead at the 5:44 mark. The Golden Eagles out-scored the Hurricane with a 12-5 spurt to close out the first period and take a 20-14 into the second quarter.
The two teams could muster only 16 points between them in the second quarter, each scoring 8 points, as the Golden Eagles took a 28-22 lead into halftime.
Tulsa shot a paltry 12-percent from three-point range in the first half, going 1-of-8, and for the second period the Hurricane shot just 18-percent overall from the field. After shooting 57-percent from the field and 40-percent from three-point range in the first quarter, ORU cooled off in the second, shooting just 21-percent from the field and 33 from behind the arc.
In the second quarter, Tulsa went a period of 2:35 between baskets, while ORU had a drought lasting 3:59.
ORU's Ihim led all first-half scorers with 9 points, while Dickson scored 5 points in the first 20 minutes to lead the Hurricane.
Tulsa travels to Denton, Texas, to face the North Texas Mean Green, on Saturday, Dec. 2 for a 3:0 p.m. tip-off.
