TU Rowing Team Earns Seven Top-3 Finishes in Day 1 of Tulsa Fall Invitational

The Tulsa rowing team earned four top marks, three second-place finishes and two third-place marks in the first day of racing at the Tulsa Fall Invitational on Friday at the J. Bird Sr. Shell Nest on the Verdigris River in Catoosa, Okla.

"I thought the women rowed very aggressively today and I was pleased to see them take on both the competition against SMU and KU as well as trying to engender some within the team," Head Coach Kevin Harris said. "That was really evident in the Single and Double where we made up most of the entries. I thought Alessia Ruggiu, Elisa Vandersloot and Audrey Brown pushed each other really well in the Single race. I was also happy to see the Varsity 4+'s working so hard. However, we aren't done. Tomorrow is the Varsity 8+ race and we need to come out and finish the racing like we did today. I think they are ready to do that and are looking forward to Saturday's events."

Sam Barber, Lucy Coleman, Julia Herrel, Sophia Camara and Alessia Ruggiu raced the Varsity 4+ 'A' to a top finish in a time of 18:04.0, while the Golden Hurricane 'B' boat, which included Sara Fazel, Lauren Vander Hoeven, Ellie Russell, Helen Leigh and Veronique Ulrich, was 4.9 seconds behind in second place. The TU 'C' boat was fifth, the 'E' boat was sixth and the 'D' boat was 10^th in a field of 14 boats.

TU swept the Varsity 2x race, as Camara and Leigh combined for a top mark in a time of 19:31.8, Ulrich and Russell finished in second with a time of 19:43.5, Voirrey Taylor and Elizabeth McCabe were third (21:10.4), and Emily Truss and Nicole Workman were fourth (21:33.5).

Amy Pitzel and Sydney Pirkle raced the Varsity 2- to a time of 20:03.9 for first-place, nearly 11 seconds ahead of SMU in second place and 38-seconds faster than Kansas in third place.

The Hurricane also finished with the top three times in the Varsity 1x, with Ruggiu in first (21:50.4), Elisa Vandersloot in second (22:08.1) and Audrey Brown in third (22:52.7).

Tulsa will conclude the Tulsa Fall Invitational the Varsity 8+ (8:30 am), Novice 4+ (9:00 am) and Varsity 4x (9:40 am) events will be on Saturday.
