TU’s Varsity 8+ Earns Top Mark in Tulsa Fall Invitational

11/4/2017 1:36:00 PM | Rowing

The Golden Hurricane Varsity 8+ earned a top finish, while the Novice 4+ and Varsity 4x both recorded second-place marks in the Tulsa Fall Invitational on Saturday at the J. Bird Sr. Shell Nest on the Verdigris River in Catoosa, Okla.

"I'm pleased with the result in the Eight, as well as the fact that it was good to see the team finish this regatta well today in a continuation from yesterday," Head Coach Kevin Harris said.  "We come off the water next week and try to build off what we've done this fall.  The team's attitude if fantastic and they are making a real step toward the championship season, but we have to keep the momentum moving forward toward the spring."

Sam Barber, Lucy Coleman, Julia Herrel, Sophia Camara, Ellie Russell, Helen Leigh, Veronique Ulrich, Julia Dunn and Alessia Ruggiu raced the Varsity 8+ 'A' to a first-place mark in a time of 16:20.5, nine seconds ahead of the Central Oklahoma 'A' boat (16:29.5) and 24 seconds faster than Kansas (16:44.5).  The TU 'B' boat was fourth (16:50.4), while the 'C' boat was eighth (17:38.3).

In their first-ever Novice 4+ race, Ashley Tran, Summer Neary, Chloe Flores, Emily Williams and Meredith Galloway turned in a second-place finish with a time of 21:04.5, just over one second behind the Kansas 'B' boat (21:03.3).

"I'm very proud of our Novice's, who had their very first race for the year," Harris said.  "They looked great, rowed well and steered the course well.  Coach Michelle Goodwin is helping to build a bright future for us with our Novices."

In the final race of the regatta, Leigh, Ulrich, Jasmine Leheta and Sydney Pirkle finished just .6-seconds behind the UCO 'A' boat in a time of 17:51.3 for a second-place mark in the Varsity 4x.  The Golden Hurricane 'A' boat was third (17:59.3), the 'D' boat was fourth (18:20.3) and the 'B' boat was fifth (18:22.4).

TU was also able to christen a new Quad, the Big Mac, donated by alumni Jerry and Jennifer Salcher.  The boat is named after their daughter, McKenzie.

Tulsa will return to the water against Kansas in a duel on March 10, 2018.
