Tulsa Rides the Green Wave to a Five-Set Victory

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Golden Hurricane (12-13, 6-7 American) returned to the court as it traveled to Tulane (13-13, 2-11 American) on Friday for an American Athletic Conference match. Emily Thorson earned her eighth double-double of the season, with 19 kills and 12 digs, as Tulsa won in a five-set thriller, 3-2 (29-27, 25-22, 25-19, 15-25, 15-11).

The Green Wave jumped out to an early 6-3 lead in the fifth and deciding set. The Golden Hurricane showed resilience as it stormed back to tie the set at 7-7. After Tulane took an 8-7 lead, Tulsa went on a 3-0 run to take a 10-8 lead. With TU on top, 14-11, Rachel Moore closed out the match as she recorded the match-winning kill on a set from Mariah Pardo.

In the first set, the Hurricane jumped out to an 11-6 lead. Tulane battled back and eventually tied the set at 24-24. The two teams traded points until the score was tied, 27-27. TU took the next two points to win the first set, 29-27. Emily Thorson notched a set-high seven kills. Lindsey Ledyard tallied 11 assists in the opening set. Taylor Horsfall scooped up eight digs, while Thorson chipped in with six digs. Callie Cook and Ebony Carter each went for two total blocks.
Emily Hubbard led the team in the second set with four kills. Moore added three kills. Horsfall and Pardo each recorded three assists in the second. Hubbard led the team with four digs, as Horsfall had three digs. Carter and Moore each posted two block assists to lead TU. The second set was a back-and-forth battle as the score was tied at 21-21. The Green Wave went on to win the second set, 25-22.

After the intermission, the Golden Hurricane started the third set on a 5-0 run. After Tulane earned a point, Tulsa scored two unanswered and took a 7-1 lead. The Hurricane extended its lead to 19-9. Tulsa went on to win the third set, 25-19. Cook blocked two Green Wave attacks, for the third straight set. Horsfall collected five digs and Pardo added four. Pardo notched six assists in the set. Hubbard led the attack with three kills, while Thorson, Cook, Moore, and Carter all had two kills each.

Tulane jumped out to an early 6-2 lead and went on to win the fourth set, 25-15. Thorson totaled four kills. Ledyard assisted on four kills and Pardo added three. Hubbard led the defense with seven digs, while Horsfall chipped in with five.

In the fifth set, Thorson produced four kills and Moore added three. Ledyard tallied five assists, while Pardo chipped in with four assists. Horsfall posted a set-high four digs.

Lexie Douglas led Tulane with a team-high 17 kills. Justine Bowers went for a match-high 49 assists. Kaylie McHugh posted a match-high 32 digs. As a team, the Green Wave had 94 digs, 70 kills, 68 assists, and 7.5 team blocks.

Thorson notched a match-high 19 kills and added 12 digs, as she achieved her 11th double-double of the season. Hubbard recorded her third double-double on the season as she tied a career-high 17 digs and added 10 kills. Moore finished in double-digit kills, with 11, and tied a season-high with five total blocks. Ledyard led the team with 24 assists, while Pardo totaled 20 assists. Horsfall accumulated a team-high 25 digs. Cook tied a career-high seven total blocks to lead all players. As a unit, the Hurricane finished the match with 82 digs, 55 kills, 52 assists, and a season-high 12 blocks.

With the victory, Tulsa improved to 12-13 overall and 6-7 in conference play. The Golden Hurricane returns to action on Sunday, Nov. 5, as it travels to Houston for a matchup with the Cougars. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m.
