Golden Hurricane Tame Cougars in Four Sets

HOUSTON, Texas – Tulsa (13-13, 7-7 American) returned to action on Sunday as it traveled for an American Athletic Conference matchup with the Houston Cougars (9-13, 5-9 American). Mariah Pardo led the Golden Hurricane with 37 assists, in TU's four-set victory, 3-1 (25-23, 25-18, 22-25, 25-20).

The Hurricane started the match with a 12-7 lead in the first set. Tulsa extended its lead to 19-13, before it took the opening set, 25-23. Mariah Pardo and Lindsey Ledyard each tallied eight assists. Taylor Horsfall collected eight digs in the opening set, while Ashton Anderson added six digs. Rachel Moore and Emily Thorson each posted five kills in the opening stanza. Moore along with Ebony Carter picked up one block assist each.

Houston opened the second set on an 8-4 run. With the Cougars leading 12-7, the Golden Hurricane was resilient and stormed back with an 8-0 run, to take a 15-12 lead. Tulsa fed off of that momentum and won the second frame, 25-18. Pardo led TU with nine assists and seven digs in the set. Horsfall added five assists. Thorson provided six kills and Moore chipped in with five kills. Callie Cook recorded a solo block.

Moore led the attack with four kills in the third set. Pardo notched nine assists. Horsfall scooped up eight digs, while Anderson added six. Moore, Carter, Cook, and Emily Hubbard each had a block assist. The Cougars held a 14-8 lead in the third set, and went on to win the third set, 25-22.

Houston came out strong in the fourth set, as it held a 9-4 lead. The Golden Hurricane battled back and eventually tied the set at 19-19. Tulsa closed out the set with a 6-1 run as it won the final set, 25-20. Thorson notched a set-high eight kills in the fourth. Pardo tallied 11 assists. Horsfall collected 10 digs. Moore and Carter each had a block assist.

As a team, Houston had 82 digs, 46 kills, 44 assists, and six total blocks. Brianna Lynch led the Cougars with 12 kills. Abby Irvine had a team-high 29 assists. Katie Karbo led the team with 19 digs.

Horsfall achieved her first double-double of the season, with a match-high 28 digs and 10 assists. Thorson earned her 12th double-double of the year, as she tallied 22 kills and 17 digs. Pardo had a match-high 37 assists and picked up 15 digs on the way to her seventh double-double on the season. Moore posted a career-high 18 kills and tied for the team lead with three total blocks. Anderson scooped up 15 digs. Hubbard also totaled double-digit digs with 12. Carter posted three total blocks. As a team, Tulsa compiled 95 digs, 59 kills, 57 assists, and five team blocks.

The Golden Hurricane improved to 13-13 overall and 7-7 in the conference. Tulsa returns to action on Thursday, Nov. 9, as it hosts the Huskies of UConn at the Reynolds Center. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
