The Tulsa women's basketball team signed Kayla Moutry and Kalen (KK) Rodriguez to national letters-of-intent, as announced today by Head Coach Matilda Mossman.
"Golden Hurricane fans will love the passion and intensity these two kids play with," Mossman said. "We are excited about adding Kalen and Kayla, as well as their families to our program."
A 5'9" guard/forward from McKinney, Texas, Moutry is a three-year letterwinner at McKinney High School. She has helped MHS post 62 wins in the last three seasons, as well as a Bi-District 10-5A Championship as a sophomore. Moutry is a three-time all-district performer, was named as the MHS Co-MVP as a junior, and was tabbed as the MHS Defensive Player of the Year as a freshman and sophomore. As a junior, she tallied 283 points, 215 rebounds, 90 assists, 68 steals and 45 blocks, and has nearly 600 points and over 530 rebounds in her career.
"Kayla is one of those rare kids who can play positions 1 through 5," Mossman said. "She is a strong, tough kid on the inside, but can rebound the ball and handle it well enough to score a layup at the other end. I absolutely love her versatility!"
"Kayla is very bright in that she understands the game and see things on the court that others don't see," McKinney Head Coach Deborah Harris said. "She is also a very strong and physical player, but is very, very unselfish. She thrives on making her teammates better and is a kid that can bring everyone together with her servant-leader mentality. Kayla is always about helping the people around her and not about herself, and she will be a blessing to Tulsa."
Rodriguez, a 5-6 guard from St. Louis, Mo., is a three-year letterwinner from Webster Groves High School. She led WHS to 63 wins in three years, district championships as a sophomore and junior, and a Missouri Class 4A State runner-up performance as a freshman. Rodriquez averaged 16.6 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 2.8 steals as a junior. She is a two-time all-conference and all-district performer, while being named to four all-tournament teams.
"With the graduation of Erika Wakefield after this season, the point guard position was crucial in this class," Mossman said. "We think we have a really good one in KK. She is a lock down defender and takes a lot of pride in guarding the ball. Offensively, she feels comfortable with the ball in her hands, can score in multiple ways and sees the floor extremely well."
"Kalen brings intensity on both ends of the floor," Webster Groves Head Coach Joshua Spuhl said. "She is a spark and is always up, and she brings her teammates up. She is super positive and her work ethic is tremendous and infectious."
