Golden Hurricane Knocked Off Huskies in Four Sets

TULSA, Okla. – The Golden Hurricane (14-13, 8-7 American) was back at the Reynolds Center Thursday night as it took on the UConn Huskies (11-16, 3-9 American). Taylor Horsfall led the TU defense with 27 digs, as Tulsa defeated UConn, 3-1 (25-23, 25-16, 17-25, 25-22).
The Hurricane jumped out to an early 6-3 lead before UConn tied the opening set, 14-14. The Huskies went on to take an 18-16 lead, but the Golden Hurricane battled back and won the first set, 25-23. Taylor Horsfall had a set-high eight digs. Mariah Pardo notched four assists. Emily Thorson and Rachel Moore each tallied three kills. Emily Hubbard and Callie Cook picked up the only block in the first set, as the two combined on a block assist.
Tulsa continued to use the momentum in the second set, as it went on a 9-2 run. UConn was able to pull within five, 18-13, but TU went on to take the second set, 25-16. Lindsey Ledyard led the attack with three kills. Thorson, Cook and Moore, all produced two kills. Pardo assisted on four kills, while Ashton Anderson chipped in with three assists. Horsfall lead the defense with five kills and Anderson added four. Moore and Ebony Carter combined for an assisted lone team block.
Thorson led the offense with three kills in the third set. Hubbard chimed in with two kills. Ledyard and Pardo each setup three kills. Horsfall collected five digs. Carter recorded a solo block to lead TU. The third set was a back-and-forth contest, as the scored was tied at 14-14. The Huskies ended the third set on a 9-2 run, as they took the set, 25-17.
UConn opened the fourth set on a 10-7 run. The Golden Hurricane clawed back to tie the set at 17-17. With the Huskies leading, 20-18, Tulsa scored five unanswered to take a 23-20 lead. The Hurricane went on to win the fourth set, 25-22. In the final stanza, Horsfall scooped up nine digs, while Anderson added four. Pardo tallied six assists. Moore led the attack with three kills. Cook and Thorson each chipped in with two kills. Cook posted a big set defensively at the net, with five block assists.
As a team, the Huskies had 75 digs, 58 kills, 56 assists, and five total blocks. Iman McGary had a match-high 21 kills for UConn. Emma Turner went for a match-high 44 assists and Elizabeth Kline led the team with 21 digs.
Horsfall finished with a match-high 27 digs. Anderson tallied double-digit digs, with 13. Cook produced a match-high six total blocks. Pardo led TU with 17 assists. Thorson accumulated 10 kills, for a team-high. As a unit, the Golden Hurricane totaled 62 digs, 37 kills, 32 assists, and eight team blocks.
With the victory, Tulsa improved to 14-13 overall and 8-7 in American Athletic Conference play. The Golden Hurricane will be in action again on Saturday, Nov. 11, as it hosts the Temple Owls. First serve is scheduled for noon.
