TUCSON, Ariz. – The University of Tulsa Softball had two comeback efforts fall just short on Friday afternoon at the Hillenbrand Invitational as they fell to Fordham 7-6 and Northwestern 3-2. The Hurricane (0-2 overall) out-hit their opponents in both games on the day, but left 15 runners stranded in the doubleheader.

Fordham (2-1 overall) picked up a pair of runs on a home run in the top of the first inning after a leadoff walk to take a 2-0 lead. The Rams stretched their lead to three runs in the second on a two-out double to right-center field before going ahead 4-0 on a wild pitch in the top of the fifth.

The Hurricane recorded lead-off hits in four of the first five innings, capitalizing in the fifth to pull within one run at 4-3. Rylie Spell led off the frame with a single to left-center field before Shelby Estocado fought off multiple pitches to reach first on a one-out walk. Julia Hollingsworth's first hit of the season was a three-run shot to left-center, scoring Haley Meinen and Estocado. Hollingsworth finished the opening game with three RBI and two runs scored while batting 4-6 on the day.

After Fordham took a 7-3 lead in the sixth inning, Tulsa rallied in the final frame to score three runs with a chance to tie or take the lead down the stretch, beginning with a solo home run by Estocado. Morgan Neal reached on a two-out walk before Sarah Kosmata drove in two runs on a RBI single up the middle in her first collegiate at-bat to bring the final score to 7-6.

A pair of Hurricane errors in the opening inning helped facilitate a run for Northwestern in game two of the doubleheader.

Tulsa responded quickly by plating two runs in the bottom half of the inning as Hollingsworth drove in Estocado on a one-out triple to center field for her fourth RBI of the day. Maddie Withee drove in Hollingsworth the following at-bat to put Tulsa up 2-1.

Northwestern's Sammy Nettling drove in the lead run in the top of the third after three straight singles to start the inning.

The Hurricane looked to put together another late rally in the bottom of the seventh as Tori Stafford singled up the middle with one-out prior to Maggie Withee reaching first to put two runners on before the game ended on a flyout to center field.

Tulsa will continue play at the Hillenbrand Invitational tomorrow beginning with a matchup against CSUN at noon before taking on #21 Baylor at 2 p.m.
