The Tulsa women's basketball team dropped a 62-41 decision to SMU on Saturday afternoon at Moody Coliseum in Dallas, Texas. The Golden Hurricane fell to 8-19 on the season and 4-10 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Mustangs moved to 14-12 overall and 5-8 in the league.
"We knew our posts weren't going to get a lot of points today, but we wanted them to get touches and kick it out to our shooters, but our shooters just didn't connect on the perimeter," Head Coach Matilda Mossman said. "That's four games in a row now that we didn't shoot the ball very well. Hopefully with us not having a midweek game next week they can get in the gym and get some shots up on their own and get their confidence up."
Erika Wakefield had a team-leading eight points, while Ebony Parker and Tatyana Perez both scored six points, and Liesl Spoerl and Addison Richards each had five. Kendrian Elliott pulled down a team-best eight rebounds.
SMU has a 54-38 lead in rebounds, an 18-7 advantage in assists, a 6-0 lead in blocks and a 6-5 advantage in steals.
The Mustangs had 26 points in the paint, 17 fast break points, 14 points off turnovers and 11 points off the bench, while the Golden Hurricane had six points in the paint, four fast break points, 10 points off turnovers and 18 points off the bench.
Tulsa shot just 23-percent from the field, 14-percent from behind the arc and 70-percent from the free throw line, while the Mustangs shot 38-percent from the field, 18-percent from three-point range and 71-percent from the charity stripe.
It was a slow start for both teams, as the Golden Hurricane hit just 2-of-9 for 22-percent and the Mustangs shot 33-percent (3-of-9) for a 7-6 SMU lead with 4:45 on the clock in the first quarter. The Mustangs outscored TU, 8-2, to close out the frame with a 15-8 lead.
Tulsa had a 14-13 scoring edge over SMU in the second quarter, but the Mustangs took a 28-22 advantage into the break.
SMU climbed to a 15-point lead with 5:00 minutes on the clock in the third quarter and held onto that advantage throughout the rest of the frame, including a 48-33 lead to start the fourth quarter. The Mustangs climbed to a 21-point advantage, 58-37, with 5:22 remaining in the contest and earned a 21-point win.
SMU was led by McKenzie Adams with 19 points, while Alicia Froling had 16 points and 16 rebounds, and Stephanie Collins had eight points and 12 boards.
Tulsa will return to action on Saturday, February 25 against USF. Game time is set for 2:00 pm at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
