
Tulsa Earns Fourth Win of Weekend, Defeats Lamar 5-4

BEAUMONT, Texas – The University of Tulsa Softball team won their fourth game of the weekend at the Cardinal Classic as they defeated host Lamar 5-4 on Sunday afternoon. The Hurricane (8-7 overall) picked up a key run in the top of the seventh inning to regain their lead en route to their eighth win of the season.
Maddie Withee drove in Maggie Withee on a RBI single to center field in the first inning to put Tulsa on the board early with her third RBI of the year. Both players tallied two hits apiece in the game.
Tulsa added to the lead with a three-run third inning on four hits, putting the second run of the game on the scoreboard on a Julia Hollingsworth RBI double to left field to plate Tori Stafford. Hollingsworth's run-scoring base hit gave her a team-leading 12 RBIs for the season before she scored her 12th run of the year after stealing third and scoring on a wild throw by the Lamar (5-10 overall) catcher.
Shelby Estocado drove in the third and final run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to center field as Maggie Withee crossed the plate for the second time to put Tulsa up 4-0.
Freshman pitcher Madison Higley got her first collegiate start, holding Lamar without a hit for the first seven outs of the game before the Cardinals plated two in the third inning on a RBI double by Brynn Baca. Higley threw 3.1 innings of work while striking out three batters and giving up four hits.
Lamar loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth inning, leading to their third run of the day on a sacrifice fly to cut Tulsa's lead down to one at 4-3. The Cardinals got another run across to tie it in the bottom of the sixth on a bunt to score the runner from third with two outs.
Tulsa responded quickly in the top of the seventh with a run on three hits to take a 5-4 lead with three defensive outs remaining. Hollingsworth send a lead-off double to the outfield for her third hit of the game before scoring on a Morgan Neal sacrifice fly to left field. Neal finished with two hits on the day and has recorded a base hit in nine of the last 10 games.
Emily Watson got her sixth win in the circle after coming into the ball game with two outs in the sixth inning and got the final out of the game with runners on second and third to secure the win.
Tulsa will be back in action on Friday when they travel to Arlington, Texas for a five-game weekend, beginning with a matchup against Incarnate Word at 10 a.m. on March 3.
