Shug Dickson and Ebony Parker both scored in double-figures in a 96-50 loss to #1 UConn on Sunday afternoon at Gampel Pavilion in Storrs, Conn. The Golden Hurricane fell to 8-15 on the season and 4-6 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Huskies moved to 22-0 overall and 10-0 in the league.
"I felt like we competed," Head Coach Matilda Mossman said. "We gave up some transition points in the second half and that allowed them to shoot extremely well in the second half. The only disappointing thing was our turnovers, which led to their fast-break points and easy baskets."
Dickson had a team-best 12 points and two assists, while Parker added 10 points. Kendrian Elliott totaled eight points, Alexis Gaulden had six and Jessica Pongonis recorded five. Liesl Spoerl had a team-high seven rebounds and Elliott pulled down five boards.
"We felt like after Shug had the game she did the first time we played UConn this season, she would we be defended a little tighter, and she was," Mossman said. "Defensively they did a good job on her."
Tulsa shot 36-percent from the field, 23-percent from behind the arc and 50-percent (3-of-6) from the free throw line, while UConn shot 56-percent from the field, 34-percent from three-point range and 66-percent from the charity stripe in the contest.
UConn had 48 points in the paint, compared to Tulsa's 16, and a 20-4 lead in points off turnovers. The Hurricane bench had a 16-15 lead over the Huskies' bench.
Both teams shot just 33-percent in the first five minutes of the contest, as TU was 2-of-6 and UConn was 4-of-12, and the Huskies owned an 8-4 lead at the 4:59 mark. The Hurricane stayed with UConn the rest of the quarter to still trail by four, 16-11, at the end of the frame. Tulsa shot just 38-percent from the field and 16-percent from behind the arc, but that was better than the Huskies' 33-percent from the field and 12-percent from three-point range. TU didn't attempt a free throw in the first 10 minutes, while UConn was 1-of-4.
The Huskies outscored the Hurricane, 24-12, in the second quarter, to take a 40-23 advantage into the break. Seven of UConn's points came from the free throw line as they went 7-of-7 in the second frame, while TU still hadn't had an attempt.
UConn climbed to a 35-point lead, 69-34, to end the third quarter. UConn shot 76-percent in the third frame, while TU shot 33-percent. Both teams went 2-of-4 from the free throw line and were 1-of-3 from three-point range.
The Huskies climbed to a game-high 51-point lead with 3:57 left to play (88-37) and again at the 2:30 mark (90-39), but TU had an 11-6 run to close out the contest, including four points by both Gaulden and Pongonis, and a three-pointer at the buzzer by Tatyana Perez.
All five UConn starters scored in double figures, including 24 points by Napheesa Collier. Saniya Chong had 17 points, Katie Lou Samuelson had 16, Kia Nurse added 14 and Gabby Williams totaled 10 points. Collier had a team-best nine rebounds.
Tulsa will return to action on Wednesday, February 8 against Temple. Game time is set for 11:00 am Central in Philadelphia, Pa.
