
Hurricane Storm Past USF 5-0 for Series Sweep

TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tulsa Softball team won their ninth straight game on Sunday afternoon as they rounded out American Athletic Conference opening weekend with a 5-0 win over USF to complete the series sweep. The winning streak marks the longest for the Hurricane (23-10 Overall, 3-0 The American) since they won 10 straight during the 2014 season from April 13 to May 3.
Tulsa picked up 11 hits in the ballgame to give them their 12th double-digit game this year and fourth in the last five games. TU had a balanced attack once again at the plate as seven different Hurricane batters recorded a base-hit for the fifth straight game.
Lexi Blevins helped the Hurricane defense shutout their sixth opponent in the last nine games as she picked up her fourth win, going distance for her first complete game shutout of the season while striking out four and allowing just two hits. Blevins tossed 4.1 innings of perfect softball before surrendering the first USF (20-18 Overall, 0-3 The American) hit of the game with one out in the fourth and second with one down in the seventh.
Haley Meinen drove in the first run of the afternoon in the top of the second inning with a RBI double to the gap in right center to bring in Shelby Estocado, who also reached on a double in the frame. Julia Hollingsworth followed with the first of her three hits first of two RBI to bring home Shannon Hughes as Tulsa went ahead of USF 2-0.
Hollingsworth got the scoring going once again in the fourth inning with a run-scoring single to plate Meinen before Maggie Withee's second hit put Tulsa up 4-0. Withee finished two for four at the plate as she picked up her fourth multi-hit game in the last five contests.
After Morgan Neal singled on a two-out bunt to load the bases, Maddie Withee came through with a single to bring in the fifth and final run of the afternoon.
Tulsa will take a short break from conference play during the week as they play host to Missouri State on Wednesday, March 29 at 5 p.m. at Collins Family Softball Complex before hosting their first conference three-game series at home against Memphis.
