TULSA, Okla. - The University of Tulsa Softball team won their 10th game in a row as they shutout Memphis 2-0 on Friday evening at the Collins Family Softball Complex. The Hurricane (24-10 Overall, 4-0 The American) earned their 10th shutout of the season in the win, while junior right-hander Emily Watson picked up her seventh complete game shutout this year.
Â
Watson moved to 17-3 in the circle on the year, tossing seven innings of work while striking out 11 Memphis (19-15 Overall, 2-2 The American) batters for her ninth double-digit strikeout performance and third in the last three starts. The junior has 192 strikeouts on the season, passing Jackie Lawrence's fourth-best season mark at TU for strikeouts in a single season. Watson also moved up on the career strikeout list at Tulsa with 441 as she passed Jenny Magill (1999-02) for sixth all-time.
Â
Julia Hollingsworth led the Tulsa offense with a game-high two hits on two at-bats and reached on a walk while four other TU hitters picked up base-hits.
Â
The Hurricane got on the board the second time through their lineup in the third inning of play. Morgan Neal drove a base-hit to left-center field with one down to move Maggie Withee over to third base before a Tori Stafford sacrifice fly drove in Withee from third to put Tulsa up 1-0.
Â
Shelby Estocado helped keep the score at 1-0 on the defensive side of the ball in the top of the fifth inning, taking away a Memphis home run at the wall with two outs in the inning to preserve the shutout.
Â
Tulsa brought across the final run of the evening as Hollingsworth opening the bottom half of the fifth with a lead-off single to right center. Hollingsworth would come around to score after a Maggie Withee single to left field was mishandled, allowing the sophomore to come around to score to bring the final score to 2-0.
Memphis put runners on first and second after Watson's lone walk in the seventh with one out before advancing a base each on a wild pitch strikeout swinging. With two in scoring position, Watson picked up her final strikeout to keep Memphis off the board and put Tulsa ahead 1-0 in the weekend series.Â
Â
The Hurricane will wrap up their three-game series against Memphis tomorrow with a doubleheader, beginning at the newly scheduled time of 1 p.m. Game three is scheduled to be played following at approximately 3:30 p.m.Â
