TULSA, Okla. - The University of Tulsa Softball team won their 10th game in a row as they shutout Memphis 2-0 on Friday evening at the Collins Family Softball Complex. The Hurricane (24-10 Overall, 4-0 The American) earned their 10th shutout of the season in the win, while junior right-hander Emily Watson picked up her seventh complete game shutout this year.
Watson moved to 17-3 in the circle on the year, tossing seven innings of work while striking out 11 Memphis (19-15 Overall, 2-2 The American) batters for her ninth double-digit strikeout performance and third in the last three starts. The junior has 192 strikeouts on the season, passing Jackie Lawrence's fourth-best season mark at TU for strikeouts in a single season. Watson also moved up on the career strikeout list at Tulsa with 441 as she passed Jenny Magill (1999-02) for sixth all-time.
Julia Hollingsworth led the Tulsa offense with a game-high two hits on two at-bats and reached on a walk while four other TU hitters picked up base-hits.
The Hurricane got on the board the second time through their lineup in the third inning of play. Morgan Neal drove a base-hit to left-center field with one down to move Maggie Withee over to third base before a Tori Stafford sacrifice fly drove in Withee from third to put Tulsa up 1-0.
Shelby Estocado helped keep the score at 1-0 on the defensive side of the ball in the top of the fifth inning, taking away a Memphis home run at the wall with two outs in the inning to preserve the shutout.
Tulsa brought across the final run of the evening as Hollingsworth opening the bottom half of the fifth with a lead-off single to right center. Hollingsworth would come around to score after a Maggie Withee single to left field was mishandled, allowing the sophomore to come around to score to bring the final score to 2-0.
Memphis put runners on first and second after Watson's lone walk in the seventh with one out before advancing a base each on a wild pitch strikeout swinging. With two in scoring position, Watson picked up her final strikeout to keep Memphis off the board and put Tulsa ahead 1-0 in the weekend series.
The Hurricane will wrap up their three-game series against Memphis tomorrow with a doubleheader, beginning at the newly scheduled time of 1 p.m. Game three is scheduled to be played following at approximately 3:30 p.m.
