
Hurricane Retire 18 Straight in 7-0 Win Over UT Arlington

ARLINGTON, Texas – The University of Tulsa Softball team split a pair of contests on Saturday at the Maverick Classic, falling to Saint Francis 4-0 in a rematch of yesterday's extra-inning contest before retiring the final 18 batters en route to a 7-0 win over UT Arlington. The Saturday split moved Tulsa to 11-8 on the year.
Emily Watson pitched a complete game shutout in the nightcap, striking out a season-high 16 batters while retiring 18 straight UT Arlington (12-9 overall) batters from the second inning to the end of the seventh. Watson, who ranks eighth at TU all-time in career strikeouts, moved to eighth on the career strikeouts looking list in the fourth inning as she passed Ami Day (2002-05) with her 73rd. Over her last four starts, Watson has 55 strikeouts while reaching double-digits in all four.
Tulsa built an early lead and never looked back as they opened the contest with a two-run first inning. Julia Hollingsworth scored on a wild pitch after walking to open the game before stealing second and being moved over to third on Maggie Withee's first hit of the day. Maddie Withee singled to bring home one to put TU up 2-0.
Maggie Withee picked up hit two of three to leadoff the fifth inning, giving her five straight games with two hits while tying Ami Day (2002-05) on Tulsa's list for career hits, eventually passing day with her third hit in the seventh inning to give her 194 on her career.
Morgan Neal and Shelby Estocado followed later in the fifth with RBI plate appearances as Tulsa pulled ahead 5-0. Neal drove in one more in the top of the seventh while another run crossed on an error to bring the final to 7-0.
Haley Meinen tossed 4.0 innings in game one, retiring the first eight batters of the game before Saint Francis (15-8 overall) brought three runs across in the top of the fourth on four hits and an error to go ahead 3-0. Saint Francis plated the final run of the ballgame in the top of the fifth inning on a squeeze bunt to bring the count to 4-0.
Julia Hollingsworth extended her hitting streak to eight games in the first at-bat for the Hurricane with a leadoff single out to center field. Maggie Withee had two of Tulsa's five hits against the Red Storm, giving her two hits in each of the last four contests before eventually picking up three more in the final game of the day.
Tulsa rounds out play at the Maverick Classic tomorrow afternoon with a rematch against host UT Arlington at 11 a.m.
