NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Tulsa Softball team dropped a pitchers' duel to No.9-ranked and defending national champion Oklahoma 1-0 in 10 innings on Wednesday night at Marita Hynes Field. The loss dropped the Hurricane to 11-9 on the year heading into a weekend where they will host the Tulsa Invitational at the Collins Family Softball Complex.
Emily Watson tossed a career-high 9.1 innings in the loss that moved her to 8-3 this season, striking out nine and walking three while holding Oklahoma (16-4 overall) to just one hit through the first four innings. The junior found herself in a pitchers' duel with Oklahoma's Paige Parker, who held the Hurricane to two hits in the ballgame.
Mikayla Whitten and Shannon Hughes both singled for Tulsa, whose hits came in the top of the third and eighth innings.
Tulsa's defense held strong through the contest as TU left five Sooner runners stranded. Watson worked around a runner in the third inning as a runner was left stranded at third to keep Oklahoma off the board. Shelby Estocado started a clean relay in the bottom of the fifth, sending it to Hughes at the cutoff at shortstop before Rylie Spell tagged out Lea Wodach at home to end the inning.
In the eighth, Oklahoma put two on with one out while moving those runners into scoring position before Watson picked up her eighth strikeout to get Tulsa out of the jam.
Oklahoma's Parker led off the bottom of the 10th inning with a double down the right line that was just out of Tori Stafford's reach at first base. Caleigh Clifton picked up OU's seventh hit of the game to bring in the game-winning run.
Tulsa is back in action this weekend for the first time this season at home as the hosts of the Tulsa Invitational and are scheduled to play their first game of the weekend against California at 5 p.m. on Friday evening.
