The Tulsa women's golf team is in fourth place after first round action Sunday at the American Athletic Conference Championships. Tulsa's four-over-par round of 292 at the Hammock Beach Resort's par-72 Conservatory Course is within eight strokes of first-place UCF entering Monday's second round.
Three Tulsa golfers are among the top-11 as sophomore Anneke Strobach leads the way in 5th place overall with a two-under par score of 70, while freshman Greta Bruner is tied for 8th place with a score of one-under par 71 and senior Nadia Majidizadeh completed the first 18 of 54 holes in an 11th place tie with an even-par score of 72.
UCF shot a leading first-round score of four-under par 284, followed by Houston (290) and SMU (290) tied for second place, Tulsa (292) in fourth place and Tulane (294) rounding out the top-5 in the nine-team field.
Tulsa's Strobach shot a bogey-free round of golf on Sunday with two birdie putts, coming on the par-5 fourth hole and on the par-3 12th hole.
After opening the day with a double-bogey on the par-4 first hole, Bruner turned in three birdies on the remaining front nine, going birdie-birdie on holes 3 and 4, and then birdying the par-3 eighth hole, thus finishing the first nine holes at one-under. Bruner went to three-under par with birdie putts on holes 10 and 11, but got back to even par on the 17th hole after three bogeys. She ended the round with her sixth birdie on the par-5 18th hole to finish the day at one-under par 71.
Majidizadeh played even-par golf for the first round with three bogeys and three birdies, including a birdie putt on the par-5 18th hole.
Sophomore Olivia Jackson shot a round of 79 on Sunday for 39th place. Despite shooting a first-round score of 80, junior Nicole Marquardt nailed a hole-in-one on the par-8, 113-yard 8th hole, and ended her first nine holes at two-over par. She went six-over on the back nine for her 43rd-place eight-over par score.
Houston's Leonie Harm leads the individual field with a six-under par score of 66, holding a two-stroke lead over SMU's Brigitte Dunne.
