
Tulsa Opens Up Three-Game Series Against UConn With 3-1 Win

STORRS, Conn. - The University of Tulsa Softball team had eight different hitters in their starting lineup record a base hit on Friday afternoon as they won their fifth contest in a row by defeating UConn 3-1 at Burrill Family Field. Julia Hollingsworth, Maggie Withee, and Morgan Neal picked up RBIs for the Hurricane (31-13 Overall, 9-1 The American) en route to their fifth consecutive league win.
Emily Watson moved to 22-3 in the circle with 13 strikeouts while moving up multiple season and career record lists. The junior's 268 strikeouts mark the third most in a season by a Tulsa pitcher while her 517 career strikeouts passed Jordan Kinard (2008-11) for fourth-most all-time.
Morgan Neal opened up the scoring for both teams with her first home run of the season and fourth of her career to leadoff the top of the fourth inning on Tulsa's third hit of the afternoon.
UConn (15-24 Overall, 1-8 The American) manufactured a run with some small ball in the bottom half of the frame after a pair of singles and a sacrifice bunt moved a Husky runner into scoring position with one out. Carissa Brizzi brought in the lone run for the home team with a sacrifice bunt to score Emma Stanley and tie the contest at 1-1.
The Hurricane responded with two runs in the fifth inning after a leadoff double from Shannon Hughes put one in scoring position before Julia Hollingsworth's second triple of the season put Tulsa ahead by one.
Maggie Withee followed with a RBI single to left field to score Hollingsworth while extending her hitting streak to nine games, which is tied for the longest streak by a Tulsa hitter this year. The base hit also extended Withee's team-best reached base streak to 16 consecutive games.
Tori Stafford extended her hitting streak to five games with Tulsa's first hit of the afternoon, a leadoff single in the top of the second inning.
Jill Stockley took the loss for the Huskies as she struck out six and walked two while allowing three earned runs as she moved to 6-10 on the year.
Tulsa and UConn will continue their weekend series tomorrow with game two scheduled for 1 p.m. CT.
