STORRS, Conn. - The University of Tulsa Softball team smacked a season-high three home runs on Saturday afternoon as they defeated UConn in game two of their three-game series, 6-0. The win marks the sixth straight league win and seventh straight victory for the Hurricane (32-13 overall, 10-1 The American).
Tulsa's first of their three home runs against UConn (15-25, 1-9 The American) came by way of Shannon Hughes in the second inning, a solo shot that opened up the scoring and gave Tulsa a 1-0 advantage. Hughes finished the afternoon with a two of three showing at the plate with two runs scored.
Julia Hollingsworth had a multi-hit day of her own, picking up her first hit on TU's second long ball of the contest in the following inning to go ahead 2-0. Hollingsworth's home run to deep right-center field was her fourth of the season.
Haley Meinen entered the game in relief of Madison Higley in the third inning to earn the win and move to 5-1 on the season as she struck out two and walked one while allowing five hits. The sophomore worked out of a pair of jams in the fifth and sixth innings, getting a double play ball that was caught by Hughes at shortstop and flipped over to Morgan Neal at second base to end the fifth before leaving two stranded in the sixth.
The Hurricane provided Meinen with some cushion with a four-run sixth inning on five hits and an error to take a 6-0 lead over the Huskies. Maddie Withee leadoff the frame with a double to center field before being moved over to third base on a Tori Stafford sacrifice bunt.
Rylie Spell hit Tulsa's third home run and second of the year after Meinen was hit by a pitch to put runners at the corner, clearing the bases on a three-run shot that quickly cleared the wall in left-center field.
Maggie Withee singled later in the inning to extend her team-best hitting-streak to 10 games while moving her reached base streak to 17 straight contests.
Tulsa will wrap up their three-game series against UConn with a chance for a sweep tomorrow at the newly scheduled game time of 10 a.m. CT.
