GREENVILLE, N.C. – Emily Watson tossed the first no-hitter of her career and first for Tulsa since 2014 as The University of Tulsa shutout East Carolina 12-0 in five innings to open their three-game series on Friday evening. The Hurricane (34-13 Overall, 12-1 The American) posted 11 hits in the win as seven Tulsa batters recorded base-hits while four picked up multi-hit performances.

Tulsa's win over East Carolina (25-27 Overall, 5-11 The American) marked the eighth straight victory overall and eighth straight in league play.

Watson's no hitter saw her strikeout seven batters and walk two as she faced just one batter over the minimum on her way to improving to 24-3 on the year. The junior's performance marks the first no-hitter for Tulsa since Aimee Creger held Middle Tennessee without a hit in a five inning win on April 26, 2014. Watson's shutout marked her 20th of her career and 11th of the season, both rankings second on their respective lists.

The Tulsa offense provided a four-run cushion for Watson in the second inning that began with consecutive singles from Tori Stafford and Haley Meinen before both moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt.

Shannon Hughes cleared the bases on a two-RBI triple, her first of the season as Tulsa struck first to go ahead 2-0. Shelby Estocado's first of two hits followed to bring in one more before Maggie Withee extended her team-best hitting streak to 12 games with a run-scoring single for the final run of the frame.

Rylie Spell smashed her third home run in as many games in the top of the third inning to put Tulsa ahead 7-0 on a three-run shot to center field that plated Stafford and Meinen.

Meinen picked up base-hit number two of the evening in the before scoring her third run after Hughes' second hit caused a throwing error to score the sophomore. Hollingsworth followed her her second base knock, an infield single that extended TU's lead to nine.

Maddie Withee sent a bases-clearing three-RBI double to left center field to pad Tulsa's lead with two outs as the Hurricane took a 12-0 advantage into the bottom of the inning.

Tulsa will continue their three-game series against the Pirates tomorrow afternoon with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. CT.
