GREENVILLE, N.C. – The University of Tulsa Softball Team guaranteed themselves at least a share of the American Athletic Conference regular season title as they defeated East Carolina 3-1 in 12 innings on Saturday afternoon for their ninth straight win. The Hurricane (35-13 Overall, 13-1 The American) out-hit the Pirates (25-28 Overall, 5-12 The American) 12 to two in the contest, sending the game into extra innings with one run in the sixth before plating two in the 12th and final frame.

Eight different hitters in Tulsa's lineup put together base hits while Morgan Neal and Tori Stafford paced the offense with three hits each.

Emily Watson's streak of eight hitless innings against East Carolina came to an end in the bottom of the fourth inning as the home team plated their only run of the afternoon on a solo home run by Meredith Burroughs to go ahead 1-0. Watson allowed just one other hit while striking out double-digit batters for the 17th time this season, finishing with 14 en route to improving her record to 25-3.

Tori Stafford picked up RBI one of two with two down in the sixth inning, sending a RBI single to left center field that drove in Maddie Withee from second base to knot it up at 1-1.

Tulsa threatened to break the tie in the top of the ninth after singles from Haley Meinen and Shelby Estocado loaded the bases with two down before all three were left stranded.

Maggie Withee reached on a Pirate error to open up the 12th inning before Neal reached one a bunt to put runners at the corners on a play that marked her third hit of the game and fifth time reaching base on the day. Maddie Withee broke the tie with a sacrifice fly deep enough to center field to bring in Maggie Withee from third for the go-ahead run.

Stafford followed with her third hit and second RBI just one batter later, a single to left center that plated Neal and put Tulsa up 3-1 heading into the potential last frame.

Tulsa worked around a leadoff walk in the bottom half of the 12th inning to keep ECU off the board with a 5-4-3 double play before a popup in foul territory ended the ballgame.

The Hurricane will wrap up their three-game road series against East Carolina tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. CT.
