Tulsa Rowers to Host Creighton and Central Oklahoma on Saturday; Three Boats Set to Compete at Knecht Cup This Weekend
4/7/2017 10:31:00 AM | Rowing
The Tulsa rowing team will host Creighton and Central Oklahoma beginning at 9:00 am on Saturday, April 8 at the J. Bird Sr. Shell Nest, while three other TU boats will compete at the Knecht Cup on Mercer Lake in West Windsor Township, N.J., throughout the weekend.
The Golden Hurricane will race the Bluejays and Bronchos in the Varsity 8+, 2nd Varsity 8+, 3rd Varsity 8+, Varsity 4+, 2nd Varsity 4+ and 3rd Varsity 4+.
"This weekend in Catoosa will be a test for our athletes to see if they can rise to the occasion against UCO and Creighton without their lightweight teammates on hand," Head Coach Kevin Harris said. "Creighton is bringing one of the largest teams they have ever had to Tulsa, while UCO is the 2016 NCAA Division II Rowing Championship runner up. It should be great racing against two well coached teams. We've been working incredibly hard this week and it will be good to see if we can apply that to our racing this weekend."
At the Knecht Cup, Tulsa will race a Varsity 4+, Lightweight 4+ and Lightweight 8+. The V4 will compete against Fairfield, North Carolina, Charleston, Buffalo and Bucknell in Heat 3, with semifinals later that day. The LW4 will take on MIT, Georgetown, Radcliffe B, Stanford and Princeton in Heat 1, while the LW8 will face Wisconsin C, Wisconsin B, Radcliffe, Boston and Stanford also in Heat 1. Both Lightweight boats will advance directly to finals on Sunday.
"The Knecht Cup has always been a good race for The University of Tulsa," Harris said. "This year we decided to make it a focus for our Lightweight 8+, which we plan to race at the IRA Lightweight National Championships in May. We have a great group of rowers and it will be a good test to see them go up against the other Lightweight teams in the country."
