Tulsa’s Varsity 4+ Captures Silver Medal at Knecht Cup

4/9/2017 1:34:00 PM | Rowing

Tulsa's Varsity 4+ captured a silver medal on Sunday afternoon at the Knecht Cup on Mercer Lake in West Windsor Township, N.J.  The Lightweight 8+ finished just out of medal contention in fourth place, while the Lightweight 4+ was fifth in their Heat.

Eva Trabucco, Skylar Luttjehuizen, Lauren Turner, Jasmine Leheta and Taylah Eder raced the V4+ to a time of 7:44.40, six seconds behind the Stanford Lightweight boat which took first place in a time of 7:38.32.  TU finished ahead of North Carolina, Temple, Holy Cross and UMass in the race.  Tulsa finished first in their Heat and Semifinal to advance to the Grand Final.

"What's more impressive than the second-place finish the Varsity 4+ earned is how far they've come in such a short time," Associate Head Coach Richard Ruggieri said.  "I couldn't be prouder with the dedication they've shown in gaining speed and what they've accomplished so far this season."

In the Lightweight 8+ event, the Golden Hurricane boat, which featured Sam Barber, Jennifer Casson, Sophia Camara, Julia Herrel, Madeline Oleksiak, Phoebe Mulligan, Amy Pitzel, Sydney Pirkle and Audrey Brown, tallied a fourth-place time of 6:53.85 in the Final.  Stanford (6:44.26), Boston (6:46.75) and Princeton (6:47.85) crossed the line before TU, while the Hurricane topped Wisconsin, Radcliffe and MIT.  Tulsa finished third in their Heat to advance.

Lindsey Smith, Abigail Elggren, Lindsay Crute, Stephanie Call and Nichole Backus finished the Lightweight 4+ Heat in fifth place with a time of 8:01.87, but failed to advance to a final.

Tulsa will return to action at the Lawless Cup, which will feature SMU, Alabama and Central Oklahoma, on Friday, April 21 at the White Rock Lake & Boathouse in Dallas, Texas.
