Tulsa’s Shug Dickson Gets Invitation to the 2017 USA Basketball Women’s U19 World Cup Team Trials

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. –– University of Tulsa sophomore-to-be Shug Dickson is one of 33 of the nation's top-19-and-unders to accept an invitation for the 2017 USA Basketball Women's U19 World Cup Team trials, it was announced today.

The trials are scheduled for May 18-21 at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Invitations were issued by the USA Basketball Women's Junior National Team Committee. Athletes eligible for this team must be 19 years old or younger (born on or after Jan. 1, 1998) and U.S. citizens. The group of invitees will be pared down to the final 12-member team.

Dickson, a 5'10" forward from St. Louis, Mo., completed her freshman season at Tulsa as a selection to the American Athletic Conference all-freshman team. She averaged 8.6 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.6 assists to rank among the top-3 on the team in those three statistical categories.

"This is a great opportunity for Shug to compete against the best young talent in the United States for a chance to represent our country at the World Championships," said Tulsa Head Coach Matilda Mossman. "Shug had a sensational high school career and had some spectacular moments in her first collegiate season that will lead to a very bright future. She has the ability to make the final 12-member team, but just competing against this type of talent in the four-day trials will help mold her into a more complete player. This is not only a huge individual accomplishment for Shug, but is important in the growth and national perception of our basketball program."

Dickson made school history when she became the first TU freshman to score 20+ points in three consecutive games. In that stretch, she scored 21 points vs. Temple (1-14-17), 21 points against #1-ranked UConn (1-17-17) and tallied 22 points at UCF (1-25-17). After an 11-point game at Tulane, Dickson tallied 20 points in the next two games against SMU and East Carolina for a six-game stretch with five 20+ scoring games.

Prior to coming to Tulsa, Dickson was a four-year starter at Lutheran North High School, where she was a Class 3A all-state selection for her final two seasons. Dickson averaged 24.8 points, 6.3 rebounds and 3.8 steals as a prep senior.

The six-time defending U19 gold medalists, coached this year by University of Pittsburgh head coach Suzie McConnell-Serio, will look to make it seven gold medals in a row for the United States at the July 22-30 event in Cicidale del Friuli and Udine, Italy.
