TULSA, Okla. — Cassady Brewer's two-run double in the third inning drove in the game's only runs as visiting UCF claimed a 2-0 win over No. 24/25 Tulsa and evened the three-game series on Saturday afternoon at Collins Softball Complex.
Maggie Withee tied a career high with three hits, going 3-for-4 as the Golden Hurricane (37-14, 15-2 AAC) saw their 11-game winning streak come to an end. Haley Meinen allowed just two hits in 3.1 scoreless innings of relief.
Meanwhile, Kamryn Toney (5-4) earned the win for the Knights (28-22, 10-7 AAC) after she allowed just two hits and three walks in 4.1 innings of work, while Manami Calixto picked up her second save of the campaign with 2.2 frames in relief.
Tulsa nearly took the lead in the bottom of the second after a walk and an error put Rylie Spell on third and Shannon Hughes on second with two outs. The Knights escaped the jam when shortstop Brittany Solis made a diving stop and throw to first to end the threat.
Aubrey Johnson started the third inning with a double, while a walk and sacrifice bunt put two Knights in scoring position. Brewer then dropped her two-RBI double into left-center field that pushed what proved to be the game's only runs across the plate.
Tulsa had another chance to tie the score in the bottom of the fifth when a UCF error and hit from Withee threatened to breakup the shutout. However, Calixto entered the game and induced a pair of groundouts to keep the Hurricane off the board.
Withee lined a two-out single up the middle in the bottom of the seventh to bring the tying run to the plate once more, but Calixto got another groundout to close out the 2-0 UCF victory.
Both teams will wrap up the regular season at 12 p.m. on Sunday, May 7.
