TULSA, Okla. — No. 24/25 Tulsa saw its seventh-inning rally come up just short as UCF held off The American regular-season champions to take the series with a 4-3 victory in Sunday's finale at Collins Softball Complex.
As the regular-season champion, the Golden Hurricane (37-15, 15-3 AAC) receive a bye into The American Tournament semifinals on Friday, May 12, at the ECU Softball Complex in Greenville, N.C.
Julia Hollingsworth and Tori Stafford each went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Tulsa, while Haley Meinen drove in a run and pitched two scoreless innings of relief. Emily Watson took the loss and fell to 26-4 after she allowed four runs, only two of which were earned, and struck out seven over five frames.
Meanwhile, Cassady Brewer and Courtney Rotten each homered to lead the Knights (29-22, 11-7 AAC). Alea White (18-14) picked up the victory with four hits and a run allowed in 4.1 innings.
The Hurricane wasted no time in grabbing the early lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning.
Hollingsworth walked to start the frame and she came around to score on Maddie Withee's two-out double to the wall in left-center field for the 1-0 advantage.
However, UCF came back with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the second to take the lead for good. Rotten and Brewer then extended the Knights' lead to 4-1 with their solo homers in the third and fifth, respectively.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Tulsa rally started when Shelby Estocado reached after getting hit by a pitch to open the frame. Hollingsworth then singled to left-center and was caught in a rundown between first and second. The sophomore evaded the tag long enough to let Estocado score and trim the deficit to 4-2.
Maggie Withee and Morgan Neal singled and a two-out walk by Tori Stafford loaded the bases. Meinen followed with an RBI single to right that pulled the home squad within 4-3. But White left the tying and winning runs on base with a strikeout to end the game and claim the series for the Knights.
