PROVIDENCE, RI – American Athletic Conference Commissioner Mike Aresco announced today the 21 teams that have been recognized with 2016-17 Team Academic Excellence Awards for having the highest collective grade-point averages in each conference sport.
Tulsa's men's indoor and outdoor track & field teams were recognized with the American Athletic Conference's Team Academic Excellence Award. The Golden Hurricane indoor and outdoor teams compiled a 3.297 cumulative grade point average, and had seven student-athletes with perfect 4.0 grade point averages for the semester.
The academic award caps a year that saw the Golden Hurricane track & field teams place 13th at the NCAA Indoor Championship and 15th at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The program as a whole, including cross-country, finished the year ranked fourth in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross-Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Program of the Year standings.
"This is great recognition for our student-athletes. Not only did they perform well on the track, but complimented their athletic success with outstanding achievement in the classroom. It shows the commitment that our athletes give to becoming exemplary students too," said Tulsa head coach Steve Gulley.
The Team Academic Excellence Award selections are made by the The American's Academic Affairs Committee. The winners were chosen based on the 2016-17 grade-point average of each student-athlete who appeared on an institution's roster as of the last contest of the championship segment in each conference-sponsored sport.
