WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. –– University of Tulsa place-kicker Redford Jones was one of 30 players named to the Watch List for the 2017 Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award, it was announced today by the Palm Beach County Sports Commission.
Jones is one of only a dozen of returning FBS kickers to make at least 20 field goals at a rate of better than 80-percent, while putting together one of the nation's top all-around seasons last year.
A senior from Norman, Okla., Jones scored 130 points on 21-of-26 field goals and 67-of-67 PATs in 2016. He ranked first in the American Athletic Conference for kick scoring (130) and was tied for first in field goals (21), field goal percentage (.808) and PAT percentage (1.000), and second for overall scoring (130). Nationally, Jones ranked seventh for scoring, ninth for total points, 11th for field goals per game and 31st for field goal percentage.
Jones has converted 38-of-51 field goals and 125-of-127 PATs for 239 points to rank 10th on the school's career scoring chart in 33 career games.
The 26th Annual Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award, presented by the Orange Bowl Committee, recognizes the three finalists during a celebration in Palm Beach County, culminating with a gala awards banquet on December 4th.
The Award is named for National Football League Hall of Fame kicker Lou "The Toe" Groza, who played 21 seasons with the Cleveland Browns. Groza won four NFL championships with Cleveland and was named NFL Player of the Year in 1954. Although an All-Pro offensive lineman as well, Groza ushered in the notion that there should be a place on an NFL roster for a kicker.
