TULSA, Okla. — Fourth-year head coach Frank Haith unveiled his program's non-conference schedule for the 2017-18 season, which includes six home games along with matchups against Kansas State and Oklahoma State, on Thursday.
"I'm excited about our non-conference schedule and the challenges that it will present our team," Haith said. "The Puerto Rico Tip-Off will give us a chance to face some great competition very early in the season before going up against Oklahoma State, Kansas State and Illinois State in December. This schedule will test us and will help prepare our guys for the grind of 18 games in a Power 6 league like The American."
Tulsa will play up to seven games against opponents who played in the postseason last year. That group includes Lamar (CIT), Illinois State (NIT), Kansas State (NCAA) and Oklahoma State (NCAA). Additionally, the Golden Hurricane are part of a strong field at the Puerto Rico Tip-Off and will play three games against a field that features Boise State (NIT), Illinois State (NIT), Iowa State (NCAA) and South Carolina (NCAA; Final Four).
The Golden Hurricane will open their 107th season of play on Nov. 10 at the Donald W. Reynolds Center against Lamar. The 10th all-time meeting against the Cardinals will be followed by another home matchup with cross-town rival Oral Roberts, who TU defeated last season at the Mabee Center, on Nov. 13.
TU then will head south for the Tire Pros Puerto Rico Tip-Off, which will include three contests from Nov. 16-19 at the Tomás Dones Coliseum in Fajardo, Puerto Rico. Along with the Hurricane, the complete field features Appalachian State, Boise State, Illinois State, Iowa State, South Carolina, UTEP and Western Michigan. The bracket for the tournament, operated by ESPN Events, will be revealed at a later date. Travel packages will be available through Anthony Travel and fans can sign up for travel information when it becomes available by clicking here.
Following the trip to the Caribbean, the Hurricane will close out the month of November with a pair of home games against Central Arkansas (Nov. 25) and UTSA (Nov. 28). Tulsa has won both previous meetings against the Bears, while it owns a 5-0 all-time mark over the Roadrunners.
The Hurricane will open December with their first true road game on Dec. 2 at Illinois State. The former Missouri Valley Conference rivals split a pair of games last season, with Tulsa claiming a victory at the Reynolds Center before the Redbirds bounced back for a win over the Hurricane as part of the Diamond Head Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Tulsa will make the short drive to Wichita, Kan., on Dec. 9 for a neutral site contest with Kansas State at INTRUST Bank Arena in the Wichita Wildcat Classic. The contest will mark the first in a three-game series between the programs and will be Tulsa's first matchup with the Wildcats since a Hurricane victory on Dec. 12, 1990. In all, the Hurricane have won five of the six meetings against Kansas State.
Tulsa will host Prairie View A&M (Dec. 14) and Manhattan (Dec. 16) for its final two non-conference contests at the Reynolds Center. The Hurricane have won all four previous matchups with the Panthers and took the only meeting against the Jaspers back on Dec. 30, 1978.
The non-conference slate wraps up on Dec. 19 when the Hurricane makes the short drive west to Stillwater to take on Oklahoma State at Gallagher-Iba Arena. TU defeated the Cowboys, 66-56, on Dec. 2, 2015, in its last visit to Stillwater.
The 18-game American Athletic Conference schedule will be announced at a later date.
