TULSA, Okla. –– The Tulsa Golden Hurricane football team had an off day on Thursday, but today we review the safety position.
When it comes to experience and depth, the safety position is thin but four lettermen and a talented group of newcomers have had a solid showing during preseason camp.
Senior Jordan Mitchell is a returning back at safety after totaling 61 tackles and sharing the team-lead with nine pass breakups in his first full year as the starter in 2016. Junior Sam Gottsch, who has seen most of his playing time on special teams, backs up Mitchell.
On the strong side, sophomore Manny Bunch has his hands on the starting position, while fellow sophomore Christian Williams (6-0, 176) will see valuable playing time as well for the Hurricane. As a true freshman in 2016, Bunch tallied 11 stops and one pass breakup in playing 10 games, while Williams had 20 tackles.
Newcomers Marcus Mays, from nearby Edison High School, Allie Green IV, Bryson Powers and Daiquain Jackson bring good size and athleticism to the position. Green IV has also seen playing time at the cornerback position, while Powers has been sidelined with an injury for most of preseason camp.
