Coach Trahan Interview

TULSA, Okla. –– The good news is that the quarterback position overall, and especially two players competing for the starting spot, has made steady progress throughout the preseason camp.

The news TU fans were waiting to hear – Who's the starter? – are going to still have to wait.

Nearly three weeks into preseason camp, and sophomore Chad President and red-shirt freshman Luke Skipper are still battling for the starting signal-caller position. Neither has started a game for the Golden Hurricane.

President or Skipper will be replacing a three-year starter, Dane Evans, who left the school last year as the school's all-time passing leader.

President missed all but the season opener with an injury in 2016, but is the only quarterback for the Hurricane with any collegiate playing time behind center. He played in six games in 2015 as a true freshman, running for 43 yards and attempting just three passes. Skipper sat out the 2016 season as a true freshman.

"I think they're really doing well. I'm looking for more consistency out of them. Both Chad and Luke bring a lot of different things to the table, and they also bring similar things to the table. They are both athletic and both can run," said Tulsa head coach Philip Montgomery. "I think they're becoming more and more comfortable with the offense. I'm trying to put more on their plate now and see how they handle it."

"The older guys are really doing well," said Montgomery. "The young kids' heads are spinning right now. They have a lot on their plate and it's going really fast for them, so we're probably a little ways away from those guys being ready."

Although none of the quarterbacks are very old, Montgomery was referring to a trio of players behind President and Skipper, including sophomore Will Hefley III, freshman Seth Boomer and freshman walk-on Brad Marquardt.
