Coach Montgomery Post-Practice Interview

TULSA, Okla. – The Tulsa football team was back practicing at Harwell Field Wednesday morning as the August heat returned with 75-percent humidity for the third session of preseason camp.

"Today our energy was high to start practice," said head coach Philip Montgomery. "This was really the first day of fall camp, we put shoulder pads on, the suns out, it's humid, it's hot, plus they're tired and sore. I thought we started really good. In the middle of practice we kind of faded a little, but we bounced back pretty well to finish out practice."

Montgomery talked about the leadership from older players that was evident to bystanders. "That's what I want," Montgomery said.

"Those older guys are like coaches on the field. I might be telling a younger player something, and that older guy may be able to explain it in a different way that clicks for him. Not only do you want those guys to be the leaders in your locker room, leaders while watching tape, vocal leadership, but they're also the teachers of those young guys. They're setting the standard of what those young guys have to live up to. For them to be coaches on the field is not only a great way to show leadership, but also to help the young guys," said Montgomery.

In discussing the newcomers, Montgomery has been pleased with their work in the first three days of camp.

"It's going pretty good with young guys. Putting on shoulder pads always causes different obstacles we have to handle, especially for those young offensive linemen. You put shoulder pads on them, now they are really tired, and getting hit in the face, it wakes you up a little bit. We have to adjust to that," said Montgomery.

"The pace of the game for a young guy is probably one of the hardest things to handle, and I think that's across the board. Everyone wants to think of skill guys in that way, but even the guys up front – just the pace and speed of the game are hard to adjust to," Montgomery added.

Tulsa opens the season on Thursday night, August 31, at Big 12 Conference opponent Oklahoma State. The home opener is a week later on Saturday, Sept. 9 against the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns. Season tickets, Mazzio's Family Fun Zone tickets and 3-Game Mini-Plans are on sale online at Tulsa Hurricane.com or by calling 918-631-GoTU (4688).
