The University of Tulsa women's basketball team announced the 13-game non-conference schedule, which features a potential five games against 2017 postseason teams, six home contests, including crosstown rival Oral Roberts, and a trip to Anchorage, Alaska, for the Great Alaska Shootout.
"I am excited about the challenges this schedule presents to our team, as we take on numerous programs that went to post season play last year," Head Coach Matilda Mossman said. "I'm looking forward to the Great Alaska Shootout as this allows our student-athletes a unique opportunity to travel outside the contiguous United States. All in all, this schedule will prepare us for play in the American Athletic Conference as well as the NCAA Tournament."
Thirteen of TU's potential 14 non-conference opponents finished last year with double-digit wins, while Belmont competed in the NCAA Division I Championship, Alaska Anchorage played in the NCAA Division II Championship, and Little Rock, Saint Louis and South Dakota participated in the WNIT.
Tulsa tips off the season with a two-game home stand, including American University (Nov. 10) and Belmont (Nov. 12). The AU Eagles finished with 15 wins last season, while the Bruins recorded a 27-6 mark, captured the Ohio Valley Conference Championship and advanced to the first round of the NCAA Championship. This will be just the second meeting between TU and Belmont, as the Golden Hurricane earned a 69-63 win in Cancun, Mexico, during the 2007-08 season. Tulsa will face American University for the first time in program history.
The Hurricane will make the first of two trips to the state of Arkansas and will face the Little Rock Trojans (Nov. 15), before hosting UMKC (Nov. 18). LR tallied a 25-9 mark, including a 63-58 win over TU, and played in the second round of the WNIT a year ago. Tulsa picked up an 80-70 win over the Kangaroos in Kansas City to begin the 2016-17 campaign, as UMKC finished the year with 10 wins.
TU will then travel to Anchorage, Alaska, for the Great Alaska Shootout, taking on Binghamton (Nov. 21) and then either Maryland Eastern Shore or host Alaska Anchorage on Thanksgiving Day (Nov. 23). The Alaska Anchorage Seawolves had a 30-2 mark, claimed their third-straight Great Northwest Athletic Conference tournament title and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division II Championship, while the Binghamton Bearcats and Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks both registered 13 wins a year ago. This will be the first meeting between the Hurricane and all three potential teams.
Tulsa returns home to host crosstown rival Oral Roberts (Nov. 29) in the friendly confines of the Donald W. Reynolds Center. The Golden Eagles recorded 15 wins last season, including a 76-68 victory at home over TU.
The Hurricane travels to North Texas (Dec. 2) before hosting Arkansas-Pine Bluff (Dec. 5). The Mean Green earned 12 wins, but dropped a 63-58 decision to Tulsa, last year, while the Golden Lions also totaled 12 victories a year ago. TU has won both previous meetings with Arkansas-Pine Bluff, including an 80-46 win in Tulsa in the last meeting, which came during the 2002-03 season.
Up next for Tulsa is a three-game road swing, including Arkansas (Dec. 10), South Dakota (Dec. 16) and Saint Louis (Dec. 19). The Razorbacks picked up 13 wins, including a 57-50 decision over TU, while the Coyotes had 23 victories, including a 71-68 win over the Hurricane in the teams' first-ever meeting last year. Tulsa recorded a 70-64 victory over the Billikens, which finished the season with 25 wins.
TU will close out the non-conference schedule with a home contest against Arkansas State (Dec. 22). The Red Wolves had just seven wins last year, but picked up an 83-80 win over Tulsa.
The American Athletic Conference schedule will be announced at a later date.
