
Tulsa Defeats UMKC in Four Sets

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Tulsa volleyball was back on the court Friday afternoon as it battled UMKC on the opening day of the Cougar Classic. The Golden Hurricane defeated the Kangaroos, 3-1, led by a career performance by Emily Thorson.
Callie Cook paced the Hurricane with five kills in the first set, as Tulsa took the first set 25-16. Taylor Horsfall collected eight digs to lead all players in the set. The Golden Hurricane ended the first set with four unanswered points. The Kangaroos held a slight lead 9-8, before Tulsa strung together eight consecutive points to take a 17-8 lead.
The Golden Hurricane jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the second set, but UMKC clawed back to tie the match up at 5-5. The set turned out to be a back-and-forth battle that saw 12 ties and five lead changes, before the Kangaroos came out on top, 25-22.
Like the second set, the third was highly contested. The two teams exchanged points for much of the set. With the score at 12-11 in favor of UMKC, the Hurricane tallied four points to take a 15-12 lead. The Kangaroos managed to pull within two, 17-15, but were unable to get any closer than that. Tulsa won the third set, 25-19, and took a 2-1 lead into the fourth set.
The Hurricane claimed the fourth in dominant fashion, 25-14. Thorson recorded five kills, while Emily Hubbard chipped in with four kills. The Tulsa defense held the Kangaroos to a .000 kill percentage.
Thorson posted a career-high 21 kills, while Hubbard and Cook totaled 12 and 10 kills respectively. Cook led the team with four total blocks, two of which were the solo variety. Lindsey Ledyard notched a match-high 38 assists. Horsfall provided another strong defensive performance with 28 digs, for a match high.
Alicia Harrington led UMKC with nine kills and Alli Schomers led Kangaroos with 22 assists.
As a team, the Hurricane hit .209 for the match and accumulated 53 kills. Defensively, the Golden Hurricane scooped up 86 digs.
Tulsa improved to 2-2 on the season. The Golden Hurricane return to action tomorrow as they take on SIUE at 12:30 p.m. and Wright State at 4 p.m.
