Frosh Powers Named Finalist for NFF National High School Scholar-Athlete Award

IRVING, Texas –– The University of Tulsa freshman football student-athlete Bryson Powers is one of 35 finalists from around the country for the 2017 NFF National High School Scholar-Athlete Award, it was announced by the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame (NFF).

Powers, from Klein Collins High School in Spring, Texas, is one of eight finalists from the South Region. It marks the third straight year that a Tulsa freshman football student-athlete has been a finalist for the distinguished award. In 2015, quarterback Will Hefley was the South Region winner of the 2015 NFF National High School Scholar-Athlete Award, and last year tight end David Fitzwater was named a finalist in the South Region.

The award will honor one young man from each of the country's five regions as the best and the brightest for their accomplishments as athletes, scholars and citizens at the high school level. The finalists all graduated from high school in 2017 and are now playing college football. The five honorees, who are being recognized for their previous accomplishments in high school, will be announced the week of Oct. 4.

Powers played quarterback, running back, receiver, linebacker and safety as a senior at Klein Collins. He was named the 2016 Houston Touchdown Club Scholar-Athlete of the Year. He led his team to a 13-2 record and District 15-6A title as a senior, passing for 763 yards, rushing for 783 yards and compiling 173 receiving yards.

"The NFF Chapter Network continues to grow and excel, and their work this year has allowed us to identify these 35 exceptional high school scholar-athletes who have clearly established themselves among the best in the nation," said NFF President & CEO Steve Hatchell. "It will be a difficult task to select one from each region as the absolute best. Each possesses incredible talent in all facets of their lives, and it is a tremendous honor for us to highlight their accomplishments."

The five honorees will travel to New York City to be honored during the NFF Chapter Awards Luncheon, presented by Under Armour, on Tuesday, Dec. 5, at the New York Hilton Midtown. First bestowed in 1991, the NFF Chapter Scholar-Athlete Awards have become one of the most prestigious high school honors in the country. Criteria for the award include but are not limited to academic achievement, athletic accolades and community involvement.
