Tulsa returns to H.A. Chapman Stadium for its fourth and final non-conference game as the Golden Hurricane hosts the New Mexico Lobos for a 12:30 p.m. kick-off on Saturday.
Both teams come into the game with identical 1-2 records, as Tulsa fell 54-51 last week at Toledo on a last second 33-yard field goal and the Lobos dropped a 28-14 decision at Boise State.
It appears to be a game of strength vs. strength. Tulsa comes into the game with the nation's 3rd-ranked rushing offense at 363.7 yards per game, while the Lobos defense holds opponent offenses to only 78 rushing yards.
In back-to-back games, Tulsa has gained over 400 yards on the ground, while the Lobos has held the opponent to 8, 99 and 127 yards rushing in the first three weeks of the season.
Chad President has led the Tulsa offense after a preseason battle with Luke Skipper to open the season as the starter. President has completed 59-percent of his passes for 546 yards with one touchdown pass. He has scored 4 TDs of his own on the ground, while rushing for 214 yards and a 7.6 average per carry. In Tulsa's last home game, a 66-42 win over Louisiana, President completed 70-percent of his passes for 243 yards and one touchdown.
A week ago, President was one of three Tulsa backs to rush for over 100 yards with 131. Senior D'Angelo Brewer is ranked 6th in the nation with 149.0 rushing yards per game, while turning in an NCAA-best this year of 262 yards and three TDs two weeks ago and 152 yards and one score last week. True freshman Shamari Brooks had 141 yards and 3 TDs at Toledo last Saturday.
The running game hasn't manufactured those yards without the big boys up front creating holes.
Tulsa's offensive line has paved the way for over 300+ yard rushing games in 10 of the last 16 contests. From left to right – Tulsa lines up on the front with senior Evan Plagg, junior Tyler Bowling, junior Chandler Miller, senior Zac Uhles and junior Willie Wright.
Receivers Justin Hobbs, a junior, and sophomore Keenen Johnson lead a young receiving corps as the duo has combined for 34 of Tulsa's 46 receptions for 418 yards and the one touchdown.
An experienced Lobos defense, holding the opposition to 396 total yards, has 10 of their 11 starters that are either juniors or seniors. Last week against a potent Boise State offense, UNM held the Broncos to just 264 total yards on 51 plays.
The New Mexico defense starts with size up front in the middle as nose tackles Johnny Williams and Jermane Conyers are 6'2" and tip the scales at 315 pounds, while Cody Baker and Garrett Hughes are the starting ends.
Linebackers Alex Hart and Rashaun Epting have been active through the first two games, as Hart has totaled 15 stops, two pass breakups, two hurries and one fumble recovery. Safety Jason Girgle has a team-high 17 tackles and two interceptions, while JUCO cornerback transfer Jalin Burrell has 16 stops and a team-high four pass breakups.
New Mexico's option attack offense comes into the game averaging 221 rushing yards and 185 passing yards. The Lobos have used three different quarterbacks due to injuries and could be on its fourth signal caller against the Hurricane.
Junior Coltin Gerhart, a transfer from Arizona State, appears to be the man lining up behind center this week, as starter Lamar Jordan and back-up Tevaka Tuioti are questionable as to whether they'll see playing time against the Hurricane due to injuries. Gerhart has played in all 3 games and has thrown for 67 yards and rushed for another 49 yards.
The Lobos usual starter, Jordan, has thrown for 328 yards and rushed for 64, while backup Tuioti has 160 passing yards in his appearances this year. The listed backup for this game behind Gerhart is 5'6" true freshman Bryson Carroll.
Running backs Daryl Chestnut, Tyrone Jordan, Richard McQuarley and Romell Jordan have accounted for 68-percent of the Lobos ground game. Chestnut has a team-leading 136 yards and 7.6 average, while Owens has gained 120 yards. New Mexico has three receivers with 100+ yards as Chris Davis leads the way with 158 yards on 13 catches, and Delane Hart-Johnson has a 20.4-yard average per reception.
Seniors Blaise Fountain at center, left guard Ray Baylor III and left tackle Avery Jordan anchor the offensive line for the Lobos.
The Tulsa defense will see its first of three offenses in consecutive weeks that play a version of the option game. So far this season, two of Tulsa's three opponents are ranked among the top-10 offenses in the country – Oklahoma State third and Toledo 10th.
The defensive front is highlighted by senior ends Jesse Brubaker and Jeremy Smith, while Trevis Gipson and Myles Mouton also see playing time on the outside. Tulsa has had mainly a three-man rotation on the interior so far this season with senior Kolton Shindelar, sophomore Shemarr Robinson and true freshman Garrett Flanary.
Senior Craig Suits, junior McKinley Whitfield and sophomore Cody Edmiston man the linebacker corps for the Hurricane. All three linebackers are active in the Tulsa defensive scheme. Suits comes into this week's game with 223 career tackles, while Edmiston shares the team-lead this year with 25 tackles. Whitfield has 18 tackles, three stops fo r-9 yards and one pass break-up.
Sophomore safety Manny Bunch shares the team lead with Edmiston with his 25 stops. Fellow safety Jordan Mitchell, who has started 19 career games, will be sidelined for the remainder of the season with a knee injury suffered last week, so in his place will be sophomore Christian Williams.
Returning starters Kerwin Thomas and Reggie Robinson lock down the corner positions, while backup sophomore Keidrien Wadley returns from an injury and true freshman Allie Green IV has seen more and more playing time as the season progresses.
The game kicks off at 12:35 p.m. (CT) and is Alzheimer's Awareness Day. Advance tickets are $15, $30 and $40. Tickets at the gate are priced at $20, $35 and $45. Fans that participate in the Alzheimer's Walk Saturday morning will receive a voucher for a $5 ticket. The game can be viewed digitally on ESPN3.
