TULSA, Okla. — The University of Tulsa men's basketball team will begin fall practices in preparation for the 107th season of Golden Hurricane basketball on Friday afternoon at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
Head coach Frank Haith, who is in his fourth season at TU, will welcome back nine letterwinners and four starters from last year's team. The Golden Hurricane returns five of its top six scorers and rebounders and will see 78-percent of its points back this season. In addition, Tulsa welcomes a pair of student-athletes with Division I experience with DaQuan Jeffries, who started his career at Oral Roberts, and Curran Scott, who sat out the 2016-17 season after transferring from Charlotte.
Tulsa's other two newcomers eligible to make their debut this season are freshmen guards Darien Jackson and Elijah Joiner. Both had standout prep careers and helped lead their programs to state titles before arriving in Tulsa this summer.
Senior forward Junior Etou is back after leading the team in scoring (12.6 ppg) and rebounding (6.7 rpg) a season ago. Fellow returning starters include senior Jaleel Wheeler (9.3 ppg/4.3 rpg), junior point guard Sterling Taplin (9.2 ppg/3.8 apg) and sophomore Martins Igbanu (6.3 ppg/4.0 rpg).
The Golden Hurricane will host Northwestern Oklahoma State at 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 30, at the Reynolds Center for the first of two exhibition games prior to the start of the 2017-18 campaign.
