TULSA, Okla. –– Tulsa jumped out to a 14-point lead in the first-half but Navy scored the next 31 points and held on for a 31-21 victory in front of 21,354 fans Saturday afternoon at H.A. Chapman Stadium.

Navy improved to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in the American Athletic Conference, while Tulsa fell to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in league play.

Tulsa jumped out to a 14-0 first quarter lead as Chad President had runs of 35 and 71 yards, both on second down, that led to scores for the Hurricane. Brewer scored the first touchdown from one yard out at the 2:22 mark, capping Tulsa's first possession. President scored the next TD on a one-yard run around left end with 0:32 left in the opening period.

It took Navy over 25 minutes to get on the scoreboard, but when they did the Midshipmen put together back-to-back scoring drives before halftime to knot the score at 14-14 going into the intermission.

Navy's first score came with 4:189 remaining in the second quarter, capping an 8-play, 46-yard drive and then at the Mids put together a 4-play, 77-yard drive in taking just 0:51 off the clock for the tie game at halftime.

At halftime, Navy held a 283-208 edge in total offense, and also had a 20:03 to 9:51 advantage in possession time.

The Midshipmen took a 3-point lead at the 1:23 mark of the third quarter, capping a 10-play, 59-yard drive.

The game turned when on a Tulsa 4th-down-and-one at their own 30-yard line, Brewer made the first down, but was hit and fumbled the ball, recovered by the Hurricane but behind the line of scrimmage, thus turning the ball over to the Midshipmen. Navy scored on its first play for a 24-14 lead.

The Midshipmen added seven points at the 8:47 mark to take a 31-14 lead.

Tulsa responded with a 6-play, 75-yard scoring drive in taking only 1:46 of the clock, as Chris Minter caught a 4-yard pass from Chad President to cut the Navy lead to 10 points at 31-21 with 7:01 left on the game clock.

The Tulsa defense forced a Navy punt on the subsequent possession, but the Hurricane offense failed to convert a 4th-down play on the Midshipmen 32-yard line.  Navy took possession with 3:43 left in the game and a 10-point lead.

A CLOSER LOOK AT TODAY'S GAME
DEFENSE DOWN 4 STARTERS… The Hurricane defense was already without safety Jordan Mitchell, who suffered a season-ending knee injuring against Toledo … and today, starting end Jesse Brubaker, starting tackle Kolton Shindelar and starting cornerback Kerwin Thomas missed the game with injuries … getting their first career starts was red-shirt freshman defensive tackle Tyarise Stevenson and senior linebacker Petera Wilson, while end Frankie Davis received his first start this season.

TULSA "D" STARTS OUT STRONG… Tulsa's defense held Navy scoreless in the first quarter and through the first 10 minutes of the second quarter … on Navy's 2nd possession, Tulsa's Reggie Robinson blocked a field goal, and on Navy's 3rd possession Cody Edmiston recovered a fumble knocked loose by Craig Suits … the Tulsa defense forced Navy to punt on their 1st and 4th possessions.

PRESIDENT HITS 100 RUSHING YARDS IN FIRST QUARTER … Tulsa quarterback Chad President had 106 yards on just two carries in the first quarter, one in Tulsa's first scoring drive covering 35 yards to the Navy 38, and a 71-yard run to the Navy 15-yard line on Tulsa's second scoring drive… President ended the first quarter with 110 yards rushing on 4 carries … His 100-yard rushing game is his second of the season, and is the first time a Tulsa quarterback has had two 100-yard rushing games in the same season since James Kilian in 2003 (UTEP and Hawaii) … he ended the game with 151 yards on 12 carries for a 12.6 average.

FIVE FROSH OR TRUE SOPHS START ON DEFENSE … Tulsa had a total of 5 first or second-year players in the starting lineup on defense today … true freshmen Garrett Flanary (tackle) and Akayleb Evans (corner) started their 3rd and 2nd games this season … red-shirt freshman tackle Tyarise Stevenson received his first career start as Tulsa started the game with 5 defensive linemen against the Navy option … true sophomores Shemarr Robinson and Manny Bunch started their 4th and 5th games, respectively.

OPTION TEAMS CONTROL CLOCK … Last week, New Mexico held a 42:41 to 17:19 time of possession advantage over Tulsa, while snapping 73 plays compared to 58 for Tulsa … in today's game, Tulsa's offense again had under 60 plays and just barely over 20 minutes of possession time … Navy had 72 plays and 39:38 of possession time, while Tulsa had 57 plays and 20:22 in possession time … Tulsa has averaged 57.5 plays over the last two games, compared to 92.7 plays in the first 3 games.
