TULSA, Okla. – Tulsa men's tennis opened its team portion season with a 4-2 victory over the Bryant Bulldogs, but fell in the nightcap, 5-2, against the Arkansas Razorbacks, at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. Joshua Goodger and Lucca Baptista led the Golden Hurricane, as they both recorded two wins in singles action on Friday. TU holds a 1-1 record after the first matches of the season.
Tulsa 4, Bryant 2
The tandem of Majed Kilani and Jarod Hing picked up a 6-4 doubles victory over Bryant's Matt Kuhar and Luke Lorenz.
The Bulldogs picked up the point for the doubles matches. Jorge Ortiz-Garcia and Jorge Isaias Ortiz-Garcia knocked off Louis Corker and Joshua Goodger, 6-3. The pair of Artur Jakubowski and Grant Pertile bested the TU duo of Mitchell Pritchard and Lucca Baptista, 7-5.
Kilani, Goodger, Hing, and Baptista all picked up victories in singles play to give Tulsa the 4-2 match win.
Scott Plutt of Bryant and Boriss Kamdem did not finish their matchup, due to the Golden Hurricane wining the match. Kamdem was in the lead in the second set, 6-5, after he took the first set, 7-5.
Jakubowski earned the only singles win for the Bulldogs, as he topped Louis Corker, 6-4 and 6-3.
Arkansas 5, Tulsa 2
The Razorbacks took a 1-0 match lead as they won two doubles matches. Josh Howard-Tripp and partner Jose Salazar won their match against Corker and Goodger, 6-4. Jose Alonso and Pedro Alonso beat Baptista and Pritchard, 6-1.
Goodger earned his second win on the season in the No. 2 singles position, as he defeated Sanjurjo, 6-4 and 6-4. Baptista battled Pedro Alonso in a back-and-forth first set, which Baptista won, 7-6 (7-5). In the second set, Baptista broke Pedro Alonso's serve twice, and won the second set, 6-3.
Salazar, Mesquida, Howard-Tripp and Jose Alonso all notched singles wins, as Arkansas took the match 5-2.
Tulsa is 1-1 on the season. The Hurricane returns to action on Sunday, Jan. 14, as it hosts the No. 19 California Bears. The match is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start and all TU students in attendance will receive free pizza.
