No. 19 Cal Defeats Tulsa in a Tightly Contested Match

TULSA, Okla. – Joshua Goodger and Lucca Baptista earned a singles point each, as both improve to 3-0 in singles matches. The Golden Hurricane battled back from a 2-0 deficit, but the No. 19 Bears went on to win the match, 4-2.

Cal's Dominic Barretto and Paul Barretto picked up the first doubles match, as they defeated Boriss Kamdem and Lucca Baptista, 6-2, in the No. 3 doubles match.

Goodger and Louis Corker battled Jack Molloy and Ben Draper of Cal, in the No. 2 doubles match. The match remained unbroken, until Cal's pair broke TU's serve to win the match, 7-5. The Bears held a 1-0 lead after the doubles matches.

Paul Barretto knocked off TU's Louis Corker, 6-1 and 6-2, to give Cal a 2-0 lead.

The No. 82 ranked Goodger faced J.T. Nishimura in the No. 2 singles match. Goodger managed to break Nishimura's serve to take a 3-1 lead in the first set. Neither would break a serve for the rest of the first set, as Goodger took the opening stanza, 6-3. With the score tied at 2-2 in the second set, Goodger broke Nishimura for the first time in the second and took a 3-2 lead. Much like the first set, only one service was broken as Goodger won the second, 6-4. Goodger's win pulled the Golden Hurricane within one point of Cal, 2-1.

Dominic Barretto defeated Tulsa's Mitchell Pritchard in straight sets, 6-4 and 6-1, to extend the Cal lead to 3-1.

In the No. 5 singles match, Baptista and Draper battled in a three-set thriller. Baptista was able to break Draper's serve twice, to win the first set, 6-2. Draper won the second set, 6-2 after he broke Baptista's serve twice. Baptista broke the first game in the final set to take a 1-0 lead. The two would stay on serve, until Baptista broke Draper's serve for a second time, as he extended his lead to 4-1. Draper managed to break Baptista's serve again to make the set 5-3, and pulled within one, 5-4. Baptista capitalized on his next serve and won the final set, 6-4. This pulled the Hurricane within one of Cal, 3-2.

After Molloy won the first set 6-1, Hing battled Molloy to a tiebreaker in the second set. Hing pulled away and took the tiebreaker 7-3 and won the second set, 7-6. In the final set, Molloy jumped out to an early 3-0 lead. Hing showed resilience and took the next three games, to tie the set at 3-3. Molloy went on to break Hing's serve to win the final set, 6-4, as he secured the 4-2 victory for the Bears.

With the loss, Tulsa falls to 2-1 on the season. The Golden Hurricane returns to action Sunday, Jan. 21, as they host the defending American Athletic Conference Champions, USF. Doubles action begins at 2:30 p.m.
