Four Tulsa players scored in double figures to lead the Golden Hurricane to an 83-77 upset victory over Houston on Saturday afternoon at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.  TU moved to 9-16 on the season and 3-9 in American Athletic Conference play, while UH fell to 19-7 overall and 8-4 in the league.

"I am really proud of our effort," Head Coach Matilda Mossman said.  "I am proud of how we got up by 18, then they cut it to one and we fought through adversity and kept fighting through adversity to hold on for the win.  Today we shot a little better than they did, they outrebounded us and they made more threes, but we got to the free throw line."

Shug Dickson had a game-high 29-points and a team-best seven rebounds, followed by Erika Wakefield with 20 points, a career-high six steals and four assists.  Alexis Gaulden and Crystal Polk also scored in double figures with 13 and 11 points, respectively.

This was the fourth time in five games that Dickson has scored over 20 points, the eighth time this season and the 13th time in her career.

"It was the fourth time in five games that Shug has hit over 20 points, but it was the first time that we've won and that is significant," Mossman said.  "As happy as I've been for her to score like that we didn't win those games, but today we did and she competed.  She took the ball to the rim, got to the free throw line and got rebounds, and she played well at both ends.  Also, Erika never backed down.  As much as they pressured her, she knew we needed the ball in her hands."

Tulsa had an 11-8 lead in assists and a 2-1 edge in blocks, while Houston had a 41-36 advantage in rebounds and both teams had 12 steals.

Tulsa shot 45-percent from the field, including 35-percent from behind the arc, and 84-percent (22-of-26) from the free throw line, while Houston shot 41-percent from the field, 37-percent from three-point range and 57-percent (15-of-26) from the charity stripe.

Tulsa jumped out to an early 10-5 lead over the Cougars at the 6:41 mark, but two quick baskets by Houston pulled the game to within one, 10-9, just 20 seconds later.  TU then went on a 17-3 run for a 27-12 advantage to end the first frame.

The Hurricane owned a 27-9 lead at the 0:47 mark for a game-high 18-point lead, and after starting the game down 2-0, Crystal Polk hit a jumper to tie the game and a layup to put TU up 4-2 and the Hurricane never relinquished the lead.

Tulsa shot 58-percent from the field compared to Houston's 29-percent in the first quarter.

Houston battled back with a 16-4 run to pull within three, 31-28, at the 4:45 mark, and had a 19-13 scoring advantage in the second quarter, but TU took a 40-31 lead into the break.

The Golden Hurricane outscored the Cougars, 20-16, in the third period, and climbed to a 17-point lead twice in the frame (55-38 at 2:38, and 60-43 at 0:51).

Houston made it a four-point game with 4:48 remaining in the contest (63-59) and two more times in the frame, including a 70-66 score at the 2:11 mark, but that was as close as they'd get as TU held on for the six-point victory, 83-77.

Houston was led by Angela Harris with 26 points, while Jasmyne Harris added 15, and Serithia Hawkins had 14 points and a team-best 13 rebounds.

Tulsa will return to action on Saturday, February 17 at Cincinnati.  Game time is set for 1:00 pm in Cincinnati, Ohio, and will be broadcast live on the American Digital Network.
